Major League Lacrosse announced Tuesday that defenseman Lee Zink (Maryland) of the Denver Outlaws has been named Defensive Player of the Year. “It's a great honor to be recognized by former players, coaches and GMs," Zink said. "I've been really excited about this season; we have a great team and I'm excited about the upcoming weekend. " Zink is the second former Terp to win one of the league's annual awards this season; the Outlaws' Jeremy Sieverts was chosen as the Most Improved Player last week.

Could Lynne Zink sell a curling iron to a bald man? Maybe. Since becoming an auctioneer more than a decade ago, the Joppa resident and former high school teacher has handled tens of thousands of items at property sales and nonprofit fundraisers such as the Washington Humane Society's annual Bark Ball. Last month, the self-employed Zink won the women's division of the International Auctioneer Championship in Spokane, Wash., where 79 male and female competitors were judged by the National Auctioneers Association on their presentation, voice quality, body language and knowledge of their business.

Thomas Franklin Zink Sr., a retired mechanical contractor and World War II veteran, died Sunday of heart failure at his Mays Chapel home. He was 86. Mr. Zink was born in Baltimore and raised in the city's Lakeside neighborhood. He was a 1940 graduate of Polytechnic Institute, where he had been a state champion ice skater. He attended the Johns Hopkins University, where he was a three-time All-American lacrosse player. In 1944, Mr. Zink left Hopkins and enlisted as a lieutenant in the Army Corps of Engineers.

With Michael Powell forgoing the professional ranks in favor of a getaway summer, the natural inclination is to assume the Bayhawks suffered greatly in last month's Major Lacrosse League draft. Quite the contrary. The loss of the No. 1 overall choice and the most creative collegiate offensive force in the game damaged their draft, but the Bayhawks are not exactly weeping about accepting the leftovers. If anything, playing without Powell was far preferable to the other option - playing without either Mike Levin or Lee Zink.

A day after a sixth-grader at Perry Hall Middle School accused a construction worker of sexually assaulting her in a school restroom, the principal said that renovation work has been curtailed while a separate entrance to the work area is created. "We're trying to make [the school] as secure as we can," said Allen H. Zink, principal of the 1,500-student school. "I'm confident that we'll do what needs to be done to make sure kids stay safe." Baltimore County police said yesterday that they have identified the man who the 11-year-old girl said assaulted her but have made no arrest as their investigation continues.

The visiting Lakers were runners-up to the Eagles two years ago before dethroning them for last year's crown. The squat pumped-up turtle straddles downtown's most prominent intersection with a brash sort of stance - as if he's the first. Alas, only the latest. Statues painted by local artists to raise money for good causes have become Baltimore fixtures - what with last summer's colorful crab invasion and artistic fish before that. University of Maryland terrapins, two of which made their debut yesterday at the Inner Harbor as part of the university's 150th anniversary celebration, continue what's become a seasonal rite in Baltimore and a cult fundraising favorite across the county.
