JoEllen Sumego couldn't stop grinning after she scored the game-winning goal in double overtime to slip visiting No. 3 Fallston past No. 7 C. Milton Wright, 1-0, and into the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference field hockey championship game later this week. In a clash of Harford County rivals, the junior scored on an assist from Kim McDaniel with 7:36 left in the second 10-minute, seven-on-seven overtime period. "It's really big," Sumego said. "It means a lot to the team that we scored on C. Milton Wright.

50 Years Ago* More than 5,000 German prisoners will be among 15,000 labors recruited to work this season on Maryland farms and in food processing plants and canneries. Paul E. Nystrom, state supervisor of the emergency farm labor program for the Extension Service, University of Maryland revealed. From 100 to 200 conscientious objectors in Soil Conservation Service camp in Carroll, Washington and Worcester counties also will be assigned to farmers for work in the fields. -- Democratic Advocate, May 18, 1945.

A Woodbine woman was severely injured yesterday when a pickup truck, driven by her son, backed over her at the county's Northern Landfill, state police said.Norma Lee Keen, 67, was in critical condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, a hospital spokeswoman said.Police said the woman was helping her son guide the vehicle backward toward trash containers when he lost sight of her.The accident occurred about 1 p.m.A state police MedEvac helicopter was in the Westminster area and quickly responded to the accident at the landfill, off Route 140 in Westminster, police said.

Taneytown leaders hope that by designing their new police headquarters as an old railroad station, they will create a stylistic linchpin for their downtown revitalization efforts. But style and unexpected foundation work will apparently cost more than they bargained for, and they have suspended bidding on the project until they can raise more money from private donors or conceive cheaper specifications. Nine bids for the project came in between $957,000 and $1.3 million, said City Manager Patrick Nield.

25 years agoMr. and Mrs. Charles Lohoefer, Mt. Airy, were frightened Saturday night when a shot came through the window of the living room where Mrs. Lohoefer was watching television. A piece of the flying glass hit the arm of Mrs. Lohoefer. Shots were fired at other homes in the vicinity the same evening and $H recently several mail boxes have been knocked down.
