An audience of about 400 came Saturday to Quiet Waters Park and remained, despite mid-90-degree heat, for the entire Annapolis Opera program of "Operetta in the Park."All three singers were in fine voice and had stage presence, charm and more than enough stamina to qualify as dedicated troupers.Tenor Douglas Bowles sang in a pseudo-military uniform, including a high-collared shirt plus jacket, and still managed a romantic gaze at soprano Mary Gresock. Baritone Thomas Zielinski also seemed to enjoy performing in the heat.

In Sunday's editions, an article about the state high school tennis championships incorrectly listed the school for players Howie Edelstein and Matt Hanna. They are from South River. The Sun regrets the error. When the time came for Broadneck's doubles team of Howie Edelstein and Matt Hanna to seize their destiny at yesterday's state tennis championships, they did so with the strong play and intensity that have carried them throughout this season.Feeling unfulfilled after three previous trips to the state tournament, which resulted in one second- and two third-place finishes, Edelstein and Hanna combined for three strong service games and some dominating net play to defeat Don Ho and Danny McBride of Blair, 6-2, 6-1, for their first state doubles title at Essex Community College.

The owner of the leaking hazardous waste landfill on Solley Road has dropped plans to reseal it with vinyl in favor of a clay cap.The two trash heaps were covered with clay when the landfill was ordered closed by the state in 1982. But what was a state-of-the-art protective barrier failed: water is seeping in and at least one slope has collapsed.Browning-Ferris Industries initially proposed to reseal the 65-acre landfill with two feet of clay, which would then be topped with 9 inches of chipped tires for drainage, fabric and finally an 18-inch layer of sludge, fly ash and dirt.

The other was a handsome, single gent -- a bit of a rogue -- who nonetheless possessed a generous soul.John Zielinski, 41, and Norman L.
