There is something spooky about a society whose second-greatest public holiday celebrates gluttony, death, fear and the occult.Richard Jewell served the purpose of assuring the Olympic tourists that the terrorism was over. There is no further need for him, or possibility of solving the case.If the campaign fund-raising orgy offends, think how much more would have been raised and spent had this election been at allcompetitive. No role here for Todd Zeile next season. The Orioles already have a third baseman, last name Ripken, first name to be negotiated.

On the field: Angels third base coach Eddie Rodriguez may have saved the Orioles a run in the first inning. With the bases loaded and two out, Gary DiSarcina singled to right and Chili Davis scored easily. But Rodriguez stopped Garret Anderson at third, and Anderson may well have scored; it took right fielder Bobby Bonilla some time to unload his throw, which sailed high.In the dugout: Orioles manager Davey Johnson likes what he vTC sees in his latest alignment, with Todd Zeile batting second, in between leadoff hitter Brady Anderson and No. 3 hitter Roberto Alomar.
