There is something spooky about a society whose second-greatest public holiday celebrates gluttony, death, fear and the occult.Richard Jewell served the purpose of assuring the Olympic tourists that the terrorism was over. There is no further need for him, or possibility of solving the case.If the campaign fund-raising orgy offends, think how much more would have been raised and spent had this election been at allcompetitive. No role here for Todd Zeile next season. The Orioles already have a third baseman, last name Ripken, first name to be negotiated.

On the field: Bobby Bonilla's homer in the first inning last night was his 20th of the year, and with that he became the seventh Orioles player to hit 20 or more homers in a season, setting a major-league record. Four teams previously had six players with 20 or more homers -- the 1961 Yankees, the 1964 Twins, the 1986 Tigers and the 1965 Braves. Interestingly, the two newest members of the Orioles lineup are at or approaching 20 homers: Todd Zeile has 20 homers, Eddie Murray has 19. But they don't count toward the record, because they hit homers with other teams.
