BURLINGTON, Vt. -- Towson's men's soccer season ended in disappointment yesterday, as the top-seeded Tigers fell to No. 3 Drexel in the America East tournament final.Seeking its first league championship since 1991, when it played in the East Coast Conference, Towson instead was handed a 2-1 loss by an enterprising Dragons squad that got to the title game by knocking off five-time America East kingpin Boston University.Drexel took that game, 2-0 on Friday, then upended the regular-season champion Tigers.

PHILADELPHIA -- The buzz before the start of the women's 10,000 meters at the Penn Relays last night surrounded Joan Samuelson, but Villanova sophomore Carole Zajac gave the crowd a new heroine with a collegiate record of 32 minutes, 22.96 seconds.Zajac is a native of Pittsburgh and won the high school 3,000 here two years ago. The latest in a line of Villanova stars that included Vicki Huber and Sonia O'Sullivan, Zajac is now very much a prospect for the U.S. Olympic team.Samuelson, the 1984 Olympic gold medalist in the marathon, is trying for the Olympic trials in the 10,000 after missing the marathon trials in January with the flu. The 34-year-old will have to try again after running fourth overall in 33:21.

With personal wine guru Mary Zajac at my side, I peer through a glass of Cave Spring Riesling 2004, sniff, swirl and sip. She asks what I am tasting. "Honey?" I venture. "A little fizz?" Zajac nods. I rejoice. Our palates agree! My wine tutorial is off to a promising start. Semi-dry wines "can taste very sweet up front," explains Zajac, a Baltimore food writer who worked at the Wine Source in Hampden for 3 1/2 years and has completed the first level of training to be a sommelier. Then, "like biting into an apple," a Riesling's flavor can move along the tongue from sweet to tart, she says.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- The two races at the NCAA cross country championships yesterday at Lehigh University couldn't have been more different. The men determined their pecking order in the first mile. Washington State's Josephat Kapkory bolted to the front and was never challenged, and Arkansas used pack tactics to claim its fourth consecutive team title.Villanova made it five straight team and individual titles on the women's side, but two-time winner Carole Zajac waited until the second mile to break away from a crowded pack, and the Wildcats' 66-72 edge over Arkansas wasn't official until the video was reviewed.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- Traditionally, competing in cross country is pain. Run, run, run over hill and dale and, just when you think a lung is about to pop from your chest, there's a steep hill ahead, followed by the lengthy sprint, usually through mud. They tell about an NCAA title meet in the late 1960s at the Air Force Academy in Colorado when a foot of snow fell on the course the day before. That was nothing. Come race day, the temperature hovered around 32 degrees and it was sleeting. Competitors had to have their frozen shoes cut from their feet, which are probably still numb.
