No. 19 Glenelg only had to look down the road for some extra incentive going into last night's regional final at No. 1 Hammond. After all, hadn't Howard upset No. 6 Mount Hebron on Friday night after losing twice during the regular season? So wasn't it possible the Gladiators could upend Hammond, too?Well, not this time. But it was close. The Gladiators (17-7) stayed within 10 points most of the game before the top-seeded Golden Bears (21-1) emerged with a 46-34 victory for their third straight Class 2A South regional championship.

No. 16 Glenelg can give an assist to this month's icy weather for yesterday's 53-40 win over Howard.Had the host Gladiators (11-1 overall, 4-0 league) played Howard on the scheduled date of Jan. 19, they would have been without starter Jill Younce, who was on vacation in Florida. And they would have missed the game-high 21 points she scored yesterday. The sophomore shooting guard scored six points and had a steal in the fourth quarter as the Gladiators broke open a tight game, outscoring Howard, 23-8.
