The Howard Community College Track & Field program competed at the Green & White Invitational April 6 at York College, PA. The Dragons had a strong showing with the men placing third as a team, while the women were seventh. Tamarra Okoya scored for the women earning second in the 200-meters with a time of 27.02. The women's 4x100 relay also had a second place finish with a time of 53.36. Jahil Petgrave won the 200 in 22.26 — holding off second place by two-hundredths of a second.

After a two-year detour to New York City, the ceremony to announce the winner of the nation's most lucrative undergraduate literary award, the Sophie Kerr Prize, will be held in Baltimore this year. The decision marks the second time in three years that Washington College officials have moved the event, which was a staple of commencement on the school's Chestertown campus for the competition's first 43 years. The event was so successful in New York the past two years that chapters of the college's alumni association around the country put in bids to host future announcements, Washington College President Mitchell Reiss said.

YORK, Pa. - There are times when York College President George W. Waldner feels like a used-car salesman. Parents look at the low price tag of an education at the private four-year school, and they screw up their eyes with suspicion, as if Waldner were trying to sell them an old station wagon without telling them the clutch is shot. With a tuition of only $7,000 a year, parents figure, there must be a catch. Mary E. Gott, a secretary and human resources worker, died Wednesday of lung cancer at her Stewartstown, Pa., home. The former Hamilton resident was 51. Born Mary Ellen Anft in Baltimore and raised on Westfield Avenue in Hamilton, she was a 1973 Northern High School graduate. She then worked as a secretary in the president's office at the Community College of Baltimore's Liberty Heights campus. In 1981 she became secretary to The Sun's composing room superintendent, Hugh Meadowcroft. She maintained personnel records for the department, which had 200 employees, researched and prepared information presented at employee arbitration cases, assisted with planning and preparing the department's budget, and was the department representative for the company blood bank and the United Way fund drive.

Samantha Hansen was named a Dimmitt Scholar at Morningside College, in Sioux City, Iowa, in recognition of achievements during the 2011-12 academic year.
