Experiencing discomfort in his right elbow, reliever Jason Berken will become the fourth Oriole within a 10-day span to see renowned orthopedist Dr. Lewis Yocum . Berken, who is likely headed to the disabled list, will have an MRI performed either Saturday or Sunday. He'll also consult with Yocum and Orioles team orthopedist Dr. John Wilckens , who is flying to California late Saturday night. "Berken is having some flexor issues," said Orioles manager Buck Showalter . "He hasn't responded real well.

Teresa Lappin Yocum, a retired personnel manager for a downtown Baltimore department store, died of respiratory failure Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Southwest Baltimore, where she had lived for five years. The former Pleasant Street resident was 89. Born Teresa Madeline Lappin in Rosendale, N.Y., she moved with her family to South Baltimore and was a graduate of St. Mary Star of the Sea parochial school. She then started her career as a "cash girl" -- entrusted with handling money -- at the old Julius Gutman Department Store downtown while attending high school in the evenings at City College.

THE SOUNDS of hammers and electric saws filled the air last weekend as more than 1,000 volunteers joined forces with Christmas in April Howard County to paint, clean and repair 35 homes across the county. Saturday was designated National Rebuilding Day, sponsored by Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April, a nonprofit volunteer organization that restores and revitalizes houses of those with low incomes. "The majority of projects that we work on are for elderly or disabled low-to-moderate-income homeowners," said Jeff Harris, a board member of Christmas in April Howard County.
