Austin Rodgers' goal with 2:09 left in the second four-minute overtime lifted No. 1 Loyola to an 8-7 victory over fourth-ranked Gilman in last night's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference semifinal at Johns Hopkins' Homewood Field. The victory moves the defending champion Dons (17-2) into Friday's 7 p.m. title game against No. 2 Boys' Latin, a 12-6 winner over No. 3 St. Mary's in the earlier semifinal. Rodgers started his right-side run from behind the goal, gained an inside step on his defender by spinning to his left and slipped his 2-yard shot past keeper Grant Zimmerman (22 saves)

Ben Yingling's anger became an asset yesterday at Boys' Latin. The senior goalie's 20 saves helped the No. 2 Loyola boys lacrosse team win its 13th straight game, 9-3, and gain an inside track toward a top seed, along with a first-round bye, in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference tournament. The Dons (15-2, 6-1 Division II), who ended a 13-game winning streak by the top-ranked Lakers (15-2, 5-2), can clinch both with a win over Severn on Friday. Yingling's performance came three days after being benched for his subpar effort in a win over Georgetown Prep.

Neither weather nor No. 7 Gilman's defense could stop senior Austin Rodgers yesterday. The attackman scored three goals and assisted on two others under threatening skies in No. 2 Loyola's 10-5 win at Gilman. "I think it was a matter of what kind of pace was established in the game," Loyola coach John Tucker said. "I think they wanted to play slower and we wanted to play faster and I think we were able to play fast at times. I think that was probably the difference." While the Dons doubled the Greyhounds' scoring total, it wasn't because Gilman lacked opportunities.

A 21-year-old Hampstead man was sentenced yesterday to 30 days in jail for drunken driving as part of a plea agreement in Carroll County Circuit Court. Brad Edward Steinberg of the 700 block Houcksville Road was 20 when he was stopped about 3 a.m. June 3 by a Carroll County sheriff's deputy, according to Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer L. Loew. The deputy saw a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am traveling south in the 1100 block of S. Main St. in Hampstead swerving and at one point crossing the double line into oncoming traffic -- coming close to two other vehicles, she said.

The consistent, solid play of Loyola senior goalkeeper Ben Yingling proved to be the difference yesterday as No. 1 Loyola held off No. 4 McDonogh, 10-9, in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association lacrosse game played in blustery conditions at McDonogh. Yingling was a wall in the game's pivotal third quarter. He made seven of his 17 saves, several from point-blank range, as Loyola (2-1, 1-1) outscored the Eagles 4-2 to take a 9-6 lead into the final quarter. "When we had a two- or three-goal lead in third quarter and they were putting a lot of pressure on us, Ben was tremendous," Loyola coach John Tucker said.

MAINTAINING attractive, legible handwriting might seem obsolete in a world dominated by computers. But Lauryn Fazenbaker, an 11-year-old pupil at Charles Carroll Elementary School, knows otherwise. Her proper penmanship recently won state-level recognition from Zaner-Bloser, the nation's leading publisher of handwriting texts. "If I wrote sloppy, no one would know what I had to say, if I had something really important to say," said Lauryn, who will receive a $500 savings bond, an engraved pen and an award plaque for her achievement.

When Jacob "Jake" Yingling, a former Carroll delegate and businessman, took on the task of documenting his family's history, he never dreamed his autobiography would become a popular book in the county and beyond. Many of the Pennsylvania native's life experiences had only been shared as "I-remember-when" tales to captive audiences like his grandchildren or fellow Kiwanians in Westminster. But since its publication two months ago, "A Man from the Palatinate, An Autobiography, by Jacob Matthias Yingling (Juengling)"

There's no "d" in "Westminster," but there's plenty of "D" on display when the school's field hockey team plays a game. The seventh-ranked Owls' defense has allowed a miserly six goals all season. It's a defense that practically dares an opposing team to score. But it's also a unit that is fully aware of momentum's fickle nature. "We never take anything for granted," said junior Shannan Finch, the Owls' defensive captain. "You never know how strong another team is until you face them."
