Following Dad in Alps; A Memorable PlaceBy Marylane Yingling Soeffing, Special to the SunThe train climbs steadily through the long, steep tunnel. Windows frame images of dark rock. Cold, damp air penetrates the car. The tunnel, constructed from 1896 to 1912, bores through the Eiger and Monch mountains in Switzerland's Bernese Alps. The terminus is Europe's highest railway station, Jungfraujoch, 11,333 feet above sea level.Seventy-one years ago, my dad, as a young man, rode through this tunnel to the "top of Europe."

The Elkridge Evening Quilters are trying to piece together the answer to a mystery of sorts -- the identity of the woman they call "An Anonymous Quilter," who began working a quilt but died before it was finished. The 2-year-old quilting circle wants to let the woman's family know that her project was completed and that it was raffled to raise money for the family of a young leukemia victim."We feel like we know something about her just from the fabrics and the partially completed plans she had included," with the fabric, says Connie Yingling, a 35-year-old Elkridge resident and member of the quilting group.

At first glance, the western Howard County intersection of Route 32 and River Road looks much like any other along the busy corridor heading toward the nearby Carroll County line. Cars and trucks zoom in both directions, most not heeding the 50-mph speed limit, many not adhering to signs advising headlights for better visibility and nearly every one of them ignoring cars trying to inch into traffic. To those who live in the Howard Lodge neighborhood tucked inside that intersection, the confluence of high-speed driving and a quick turn into traffic was, quite literally and tragically, an accident waiting to happen.

A Sykesville woman has died of injuries suffered in a two-vehicle accident last week that killed her 13-year-old son and injured her 5-year-old daughter. Kyong Hae Kim, 51, of the 12200 block of Howard Lodge Road died Monday night at Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she had been taken in critical condition last Wednesday after the accident near her family's home. Kim, whose friends called her Jennifer, was taking her son, Vincent, and her daughter, Jacqueline, to a riding lesson at a nearby stable when she pulled out of the neighborhood at River Road and was trying to head south on Route 32. A flat-bed tow truck driven by a Westminster man was northbound on Route 32 when it collided with Kim's Mazda van. Vincent was pronounced dead at Howard County Hospital later that day. Jacqueline was taken to Children's Hospital in Washington and was released a couple of days later.

It didn't take long for Vincent Woodward to make his presence felt at Mount View Middle School in Marriottsville. Within months after his arrival as a sixth-grader, Vincent was elected school president. Nor did it matter to the rest of the students that Vincent, who would have entered eighth grade in the fall, had a form of dwarfism. Many who had grown up with him had long been won over by his indomitable spirit and magnetic personality. If they thought of him being different, it was because he was more mature, more grounded and generally more fun to be around than most of his peers.

Sixth-ranked Liberty came within inches several times of taking the lead in last night's Class 2A state championship game against James M. Bennett, but two shots against the crossbar and a few deflections kept the game tied at UMBC. After 100 scoreless minutes, Bennett took advantage of those miscues and won the penalty kick shootout, 5-3, to capture its first state championship. It was the last game for Liberty coach Ed DeVincent, who will focus entirely on being the school's athletic director, but he was more concerned about the fortitude of his players than his legacy on the sidelines.
