At first I did not hit it off with The Gourmet Cookbook, the just-released $40 piece of work from Houghton Mifflin. Things were rocky early. I didn't care for its appearance. It was too yellow. The cover was yellow, the recipe titles were yellow, even the ribbons used to mark your spot in the 1,040-page tome were yellow. Yellow is not my color. It is also not a smart shade to use for type printed on cream-colored pages. The effect might be subtle. But the type virtually disappears from view.

The yellow arrows seen the most are the ones that tell us to slow down for an approaching stop. Yellow Arrow, a project launched by the New York City-based entertainment and game company Counts Media two years ago, is trying to change that, showing the world there is more to everything than meets the eye. The company's yellow, arrow-shaped stickers are showing up on sidewalks, lamp posts and benches across the world, highlighting monuments of historic and...

Chapelgate girls basketball coach Jim Barber has long said that his program would not be ready to graduate from the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference to the A division for at least three years. Barber's reservations proved prophetic as the reigning B Conference-champion Yellow Jackets suffered their worst loss of the season in a 68-48 thrashing by the A Conference's St. John's-Prospect Hall on Monday in Marriottsville. For the past two seasons, Chapelgate and the Vikings have established a rivalry in which St. John's emerged with the B title in 2000-01 and the Yellow Jackets prevailed last season.

Chapelgate's girls basketball team sure knows how to leave the regular season behind at tournament time. After losing twice during the regular season to St. Paul's, the Yellow Jackets stung the Gators with defense and rebounding last night to pull off a 38-17 upset and win their second straight Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference final at Villa Julie College. Last year, the Yellow Jackets (18-6) lost twice to St. John's at Prospect Hall and then came back to win the tourney title.

The roller-coaster ride that took the Chapelgate girls basketball team through a prolonged downturn appears to be moving to higher elevations. The Yellow Jackets blotted out the memory of losing four of their past five Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland B Conference games by upending visiting Pallotti, 71-62, last night in Marriottsville. Nearly a year removed from winning the conference championship, Chapelgate moved one step closer to tying the Panthers for the No. 2 seed in next week's season-ending tournament.

It’s Rolling Papers Week at Louder Now. Wiz Khalifa, hip-hop’s young pothead-in-charge, drops his highly anticipated major-label debut Tuesday. Every day this week, I’m going to analyze the tracks: what works, what doesn’t and what it means for a rap star clearly interested in crossing over to mainstream success. 3. “Black and Yellow” (Produced by Stargate) What else is there to say about “Black and Yellow”? It’s the best pure rap single in years, and it rose to No. 1 in a beautiful way. It was an ode to his city without sounding like a showtune (Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind”)

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are no longer on the verge of a breakthrough. They have arrived with a bang and have the makings of a team that could shake up the hierarchy of the Atlantic Coast Conference. By destroying Ohio State, 73-53, on the road two nights ago, Georgia Tech put its stamp on a dominant showing by the ACC, which trounced the Big Ten by winning seven of nine contests in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. The No. 13 Yellow Jackets, ranked for the first time since December 1997, also served notice that their 6-0 start, their best in nine years, is not a fluke.

SAN ANTONIO - A little over six minutes into their NCAA tournament semifinal confrontation with Oklahoma State, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets showed their other face, the one that has helped them wear down opponent after opponent during this magical postseason run. Onto the Alamodome floor came junior guard Will Bynum, junior forward Isma'il Muhammad, fifth-year senior Clarence Moore and sophomore forward Theodis Tarver. They are the gang of four that has added invaluable bulk to Georgia Tech's foundation.

Colors gallop in and out of fashion with a perplexing and, for many consumers, maddening gait. Just about the time you decipher mauve, jade and teal, the colors shift and the game of Cuckold the Consumer hits a new level with celadon, plantain and aubergine. Worse yet, the new colors make the old ones look dated. As philosopher George Santayana once observed: "For something to be 'fashionable' is unfortunate, for it must ever-afterward be 'old-fashioned.' "As many consumers suspect, the process that determines what is fashionable is anything but haphazard.

Although Wiz Khalifa’s Pittsburgh-repping calling card “Black and Yellow” still sits at No. 18 on Billboard , the song will soon likely fade just as the Steelers’ Super Bowl hopes did last month. So here’s “Roll Up,” another Stargate-produced track poised to dominate radio. The beat’s shimmering synths and surprisingly knocking drums will sound at home on pop radio (get ready, Z104) and rap station 92Q. If you’re not sold on Wiz’s lyrical ability, “Roll Up” won’t change your mind – these are elementary lines easy to memorize, recite and regurgitate.
