New-home sales in the Baltimore metropolitan area for July rose a modest 1.45 percent over the same period last year, according to statistics released by The Meyers Group.Meyers reported that 701 units were sold in July, compared with 691 in July 1998.But while net sales for the month are slightly up, year-to-date numbers still fall short of 1998 year-to-date sales, down 3.52 percent. So far 5,626 units have been sold compared with 5,831 at the same time in 1998."July numbers demonstrated new homebuyer urgency in the face of rising mortgage interest rates," said Anna Pitheon, regional sales director for The Meyers Group.

New-home sales in the Baltimore metropolitan area for May dropped 16.97 percent when compared with the corresponding period last year, as new-home prices steadily increased, according to the Meyers Group, a Washington company that tracks new-home construction. The decline mirrored a yearlong drop in sales as year-to-date numbers were off 14.07 percent compared with the first five months of last year for single-family homes, townhouses and condominiums. New single-family home sales have shown the biggest year-to-date decrease in the area.

Single-family home sales dropped 9 percent in Howard County last month, compared to August 1989, the county Association of Realtors reported.The association reported that 302 single-family homes were sold last month, 31 fewer than last year's August sales.Sales for the year through August went from 1,892 last year to 2,027 this year, and increase of 7 percent.August condominium sales experienced a similar drop in August, from 48 to 45 units, while year-to-date sales were up 22 percent, from 295 to 361 units, the association reported.
