Yale's recent success - an 8-2 record and the No. 14 spot in The Sun's rankings - should not be that shocking considering that the program earned a share of the Ivy League regular-season championship in 2010 and captured the conference tournament last year to advance to the NCAA tournament. The Bulldogs' emergence is certainly not a surprise to Maryland coach John Tillman, who occupied the same position at Harvard - an Ivy League rival of Yale's - from 2008 to 2010. Tillman, whose No. 6 Terps (8-2)

No. 7 Notre Dame made its argument Tuesday for why it still belongs in discussions about the best men's lacrosse team in NCAA Division I. One day removed from falling out of the top spot in The Baltimore Sun's rankings, the Fighting Irish (7-2) rolled to a 17-5 neutral-site victory over a less-experienced Golden Eagles (2-5) squad at Loyola Academy's Hoerster Field in Wilmette, Ill. The Golden Eagles, who started seven underclassmen - including a half-dozen freshmen - kept things close early after a fairly pedestrian first quarter in which both sides tried to control the tempo by being selective on the attacking end. Co-captain Ben Dvorak got Marquette on the scoreboard with 40 seconds left in the opening quarter to tie the score at 1. It didn't stay even for long, however, as Notre Dame's John Scioscia ended the first quarter with the first of his six goals on the day. The score remained that way until near the midway point of the second quarter.

Any high school graduate who thinks that college is merely a next step should walk a mile in Gabe Acheson's shoes. When the Park School graduate arrived Thursday at Yale University, he'd walked nearly 400 miles, fulfilling a promise he'd made in his application to the Ivy League school, and to himself, to not just embark on a new adventure but create one. Acheson set out from his Rodgers Forge home on July 29, with a 35-pound backpack, an optimistic...

No. 19 Yale (9-4) vs. No. 14 Cornell (9-3) Friday, 5 p.m. Outlook: This semifinal in the Ivy League tournament, hosted by Princeton, is a rematch of the March 17 meeting in which the Big Red outlasted the Bulldogs, 8-7. At that time, Cornell was thought to be a lock for the NCAA tournament. But with back-to-back losses to Brown and Princeton, the Big Red - the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament - might need to win the tourney to guarantee a berth in the NCAA tournament.
