Elizabeth Rose Hodous, a nurse who worked in her husband's medical office in Van Bibber for many years, died of pneumonia Tuesday at the Bel Air Convalescent Center. She was 81.Services for Mrs. Hodous, who had lived in Van Bibber, will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Cokesbury Memorial United Methodist Church in Abingdon.Her husband, Dr. Frederick O. Hodous, maintained a general practice for more than 40 years until his death in 1975.The former Elizabeth Rose Johnston was born in Marlinton, W. Va. She grew up in Baltimore, where she graduated from Eastern High School and the Church Home and Hospital Nursing School.

Lester Jay Stone, 92, a regional seascape and nautical painter, will exhibit a collection of 16 oil and watercolor paintings at Antrim 1844 Country House Hotel in Taneytown. A free, public opening reception will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 13. Guests are invited to stay for a private dinner with the artist afterward. The six-course dinner costs $62.50 by reservation only. A member of the American Society of Marine Artists, Stone has shown his work from Florida to Maine over four decades.

The 27th annual Annapolis Race Week will fill the waters off Annapolis with about 200 racing sailboats this weekend, as three separate fleets compete on courses spread from just north of the Bay Bridge to the West River.Racing begins this morning, and runs through Monday, with up to two races daily for each fleet -- depending, of course, on cooperative wind conditions.Fleet 1 includes IMS I and II, and PHRF A-1 and A-2, while Fleet 2's racers include IMS III, PHRF B, MORC, and the J/30s.Fleet 3 racers include PHRF C and Nonspinnaker, along with J/24s, Catalina 27s, and Cal 25s.The 200 entrants make it the largest big-boat multi-race regatta on the Northern Bay.The event is run by the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Racing Association, with race management by Annapolis Yacht Club, the Baltimore City Yacht Association, Eastport Yacht Club, the Gibson Island Yacht Squadron, the Magothy River Sailing Association, the Naval Academy Sailing Squadron, the Sailing Club of the Chesapeake, Shearwater Sailing Club and West River Sailing Club.

The first official cruise of the Bush River Boat Club took place on Sept. 10, 1939. The cruise went to Betterton. The fleet consisted of three cruisers, five speed boats and one sailboat. The club was founded on June 22, 1939. The club eventually became what is know today as the Bush River Yacht Club. The club boats more than 150 boats and about 300 members, according the treasurer Tom Dice. Harford County Directory

Bishop C. Helfenbein, who ran a butcher stall in the Belair Market for 58 years and was longtime president of the stall merchants association, died yesterday at Brook Grove Nursing Home in Olney after a long illness.He was 83.One of the old breed of German butchers in the city markets, Mr. Helfenbein was a sarcastic yet effective advocate for the Belair Market stall operators for many years until his retirement in 1983.He was instrumental in convincing City Hall to rebuild the citymarkets in the 1970s, proclaiming the modern, festive-lookingstructures the precursors of Harborplace.

In the end, the power of youth overcame wit, agility and sheer trickery to win the anything-goes second Build-a-Boat Challenge in Annapolis yesterday.Removing Eastport Yacht Club from its throne of victory, the inexperienced Bay Ridge Nursery crew in its light-green Mulchin Mohicans creation took home the coveted title of Fastest Boat at Sea Trial.This meant neither of the city's two esteemed yachting establishments -- the Eastport and Annapolis yacht clubs -- could defeat a team sponsored by a decidedly earthbound business.

Robert Emmet Dunne, a retired banker and decorated combat Marine, died of diabetes Friday at his Annapolis home. He was 54. Mr. Dunne was born in New York City and raised in Arlington, Va. In 1965, he enlisted in the Marine Corps, where he earned his General Education Development degree. Wounded twice in combat while serving in Vietnam, Mr. Dunne was decorated with two Purple Hearts. His other decorations included two Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Medal, the Vietnamese Service Medal, the Vietnamese Campaign Medal and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.

Annapolis police have developed a preliminary sketch of an assailant in Thursday's fatal carjacking in the city's historic district, said Officer Hal Dalton, spokesman for the police. Straughan Lee Griffin, 51, was shot and run over outside his Cumberland Court home near the State House at about 7:30 p.m., but descriptions of the two young male attackers have remained vague. Dalton would not say how police artists put together the sketch, nor would he describe it. Police say they will not release the composite drawing until it is seen and verified by other witnesses, Dalton said.

Club fined for selling beer from pierThe owners of an Edgewater yacht club have been fined $300 by the county liquor board for selling beer from a pier in May.The board also suspended the club's liquor license for three days, but suspended the penalty for one year -- meaning it will be erased in September 1994 if the club remains trouble free.Tom Riggin, the chairman of the Anne Arundel County Liquor Board, said the Liberty Yacht Club has a restricted liquor license that allows it to sell alcohol in its clubhouse, only to club members and their guests, and prohibits advertising.

The owners of an Edgewater yacht club are scheduled to go before the county liquor board in two weeks to face charges that they broke the law when employees allegedly sold beer from a pier in May.Tom Riggin, the chairman of the Anne Arundel County Liquor Board, said the Liberty Yacht Club has a restricted liquor license that allows it to sell alcohol in its clubhouse, only to club members and their guests, and prohibits advertising.According to a report, a county inspector visited the club, in the first block of Old South River Road, on May 29 and found a Budweiser banner hanging from a small building next to the bulkhead, advertising drinks at a convenience store.
