LANDOVER -- It was a gamble that paid off big -- $40,000 in prize money, to be exact.Paul Wylie, a 1992 Olympic silver medalist, took an unconventional approach, but won the men's competition of the DuraSoft Colors World Professional Championships at USAir Arena on Saturday night.Wylie, 29, finished with 99.2 points, topping Robin Cousins (98.3).Midori Ito edged out Kristi Yamaguchi for the women's championship, but it was Wylie who left the crowd mesmerized with his jumps.Wylie's artistic program was stunning.

ALBERTVILLE, France -- Five weeks ago, Paul Wylie thought his figure skating career was finished. He was in street clothes, preparing for disappointment at the U.S. National Championships in Orlando, Fla.Suddenly, he was called to a medals platform by judges who had given him a reprieve -- and a ticket to the Winter Olympics.Tonight, he will skate for gold.Wylie, the 27-year-old Harvard graduate who has endured a career of disappointments and second-place finishes, is the only American with a chance to win a medal when the men's figure skating competition ends tonight.

Ruth C. Wylie, the retired chairwoman of the Goucher College psychology department who wrote about self-image and was a champion of women's education, died of pneumonia Tuesday at Broadmead Retirement Community in Cockeysville, where she had lived for five years. The former Towson resident was 83. Born in Beaver Falls, Pa., she earned a psychology degree at her hometown school, Geneva College, where her parents taught psychology. She earned a master's degree and doctorate at the University of Pittsburgh.
