The Orioles sent Derrek Lee to a hand specialist in Sarasota on Tuesday and he'll have an MRI on his right wrist there Wednesday, raising further doubt about whether the veteran first baseman will be ready for Opening Day. Lee, who hasn't played in a Grapefruit League game after having surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb in November, started experiencing right wrist soreness within the past week. He attributes the soreness to atrophy in his wrist after having his thumb in a cast for an extended period.

While other Orioles pitchers head to different fields to throw bullpen sessions or work on their fielding and pickoff moves, Brandon Erbe stays off to the side and plays catch with an athletic trainer. It is a tedious and, at times, frustrating routine for the pitcher, but it's also a necessary one if the former McDonogh standout hopes to rebound from shoulder surgery and get to the big leagues. "It's tough because you want to get back as soon as possible," said Erbe, a 23-year-old right-hander who had surgery to repair a torn labrum in mid-August.

First baseman Derrek Lee appeared to be on the verge of making his Orioles exhibition debut, but he will be held out of Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox because of soreness in his right wrist. Lee is coming back from surgery to repair torn ligaments in his right hand, and the wrist soreness might be related to the resumption of regular baseball activities after a lengthy layoff. "The good news is there's no problem at all with the thumb. … It feels good," manager Buck Showalter said before Friday's win over the Detroit Tigers at Joker Marchant Stadium.

It took me 20 years, after moving here, to say "Maryland" when people asked me where I was from. I was a proud New Yorker, with a long and hard adjustment to life in the Maryland suburbs. But I stayed — long enough to become a "former New Yorker," long enough to call Maryland my permanent home. Today, I am ashamed to be a Marylander. Gov. Martin O'Malley proudly includes on his legislative agenda an item to criminalize child neglect. Bravo, Martin O'Malley, many will say. Indeed, every state should, in fact must , have such a statute.

Ganglion cysts are unsightly and sometimes painful. But while the fluid-filled sacs clustered around wrists and other joints are common, not a lot is known about their cause. A trip to the doctor can give sufferers some peace of mind that they are not a serious medical problem — or some options for having them removed, says Dr. Stacey H. Berner, medical director of the Hand and Upper Extremity Center at Northwest Hospital Center. QUESTION: What are ganglion cysts? ANSWER: Ganglion cysts are fluid-filled tissue sacs.

It was shortly after 10 p.m. on a Friday night when a Harford County sheriff's deputy arrived at residence in Fallston responding to an anonymous parent's complaint that alcohol and pot were being served to minors. Fifty or more cars filled the nearby streets. Alerted to the event by social media, high school students had come from as far away as Lutherville and Columbia to be there. In and around the home was a crowd of 70-100 kids, tables in the basement were covered with cans of beer and liquor bottles, and a strong smell of marijuana wafted through the air. When the deputy approached the homeowner, Frederick Durst, 54, he told them "everything was fine.

A Maryland state delegate proposes that anyone convicted of drunken driving three times be forced to use a bright yellow license plate bearing the letters "DUI." But why does anyone with three convictions get to continue operating a motor vehicle? How about three strikes, and you're taking the bus? Let's see a state delegate propose that as a remedy. As for the yellow stigmata -- forget about it. If a drunk is still on the road, still licensed to drive, a yellow license plate isn't going to do the rest of us much good.

After celebrating an upset against No. 4 Purdue on Saturday, Wisconsin fans are worrying about the loss of a player who helped contribute to that victory. Forward Jon Leuer sustained a broken left wrist during a fall early in the game and is out indefinitely. He is scheduled for surgery on Tuesday. Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan said he will approach this as he does when Leuer is on the bench with foul trouble. "We have to go with the next guy," Ryan said. "Are we going to whine?

COLLEGE PARK -- Tailback Da'Rel Scott, who broke his wrist in Maryland's win over Clemson on Oct. 3 and missed the next five games, has begun practicing and is likely to return Saturday against Florida State. But quarterback Chris Turner (knee) will miss his second straight game. The fifth-year senior is "50-50" to play in Maryland's final game of the season - and the last of his career - against Boston College on Nov. 28, coach Ralph Friedgen said Tuesday. The Terps have not won a game since Scott's injury Oct. 3. But Maryland (2-8, 1-5 Atlantic Coast Conference)
