In preparation for the 2013 Federation of International Lacrosse World Cup, US Lacrosse announced its 36-woman national team, which includes 13 players from Maryland. Ricky Fried, Georgetown's coach who will coach the national team, said selecting the team was more difficult than ever. "This was the most competitive tryout I've ever been a part of," Fried said in a statement. "We think that this is the best team of 36 players for the style and tempo we want to play. This group will comprise the core of the team which will defend the gold medal in 2013."

How does hosting a World Cup sound to you, Baltimore? Sound like a pretty good idea? Bring a lot of visitors to the city? Generate a lot of ka-ching for hotels, bars and restaurants? Then where were you Saturday night, when a crowd of just 36,569 showed up at M&T Bank Stadium for the big soccer friendly between Manchester City and Inter Milan? Understand this isn't to say a crowd that size is anything to sneeze at. Forty thousand is fine for, like, a big dog show.

Though disappointed that his countryman won't be playing, Calcagno is planning on driving up from Bethesda with his son, Santino, to see the game. "My 6-year-old got totally crazy about this World Cup. He didn't know anything about the game before that.

Twice in the past year, Baltimore has become a soccercentric city. It happened last summer, for a day, when two of the world's best teams, AC Milan and Chelsea, came to M&T Bank Stadium, bringing more than 72,000 fans with them. It happened recently, during the monthlong World Cup, when fans of the game piled into bars and crowded near the harbor to watch the U.S. team's run to the knockout round. But could it happen on a more regular basis? City officials, developers and local soccer aficionados believe it can, if plans move forward for a soccer-only stadium and if Baltimore is successful in attracting D.C. United away from Washington.
