A Woodlawn man and his girlfriend have pleaded guilty to fraud and identity theft charges in a federal case that compromised the personal information of more than 250 people - including doctors who applied for fellowships at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where the girlfriend worked. Derrick Hill, 52, was the "ringleader" of a group of four people - including his girlfriend, Renee Cabell, 51, and co-defendants John Coffey and Tawney King, who have also pleaded guilty - that stole more than $188,000 in cash, merchandise and services through their scheme between August and October 2009, according to a statement from the Maryland U.S. State's Attorney's Office.

Baltimore County police have charged three men in a targeted, nonfatal shooting in Woodlawn early Sunday morning. The unidentified victim, who is listed in good condition at a local hospital, was found in a Nissan Altima suffering a gunshot wound in the first block of Guild Hall Court. Police charged Antonio Charles Johnson , 22, of the 7400 block of Castlemoor Road in Gwynn Oak, James Edward Prescoe Braxton, 22, of the 4100 block of Reisterstown Road in Baltimore, and Guyon Ingram Mathurine, 23, of the 3500 block of Woodmoor Road in Gwynn Oak. They face attempted first-degree murder and first-degree assault charges and are being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center.

Baltimore County police found a man in a Nissan Altima suffering a gunshot wound in Woodlawn early Sunday morning, police reported. The man, found in the unit block of Guild Hall Court, was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries, but police said Sunday afternoon that they did not know his condition. Officers have apprehended three people in connection with the shooting, police said. The Baltimore County Police Department Violent Crimes Unit is investigating the incident, police said.

The Social Security Administration is planning to build a "security barrier" at its Woodlawn headquarters that officials say is needed to protect employees and visitors. Though available details of its design are sparse - several elected officials said they had not yet been briefed on the plans - an agency spokesman acknowledged that millions of dollars have been budgeted for security upgrades at the agency's headquarters, including some form of barrier. "These upgrades, including a security barrier, are necessary for the safety of our employees, visitors to our buildings, and the security of our campus," spokesman Mark Hinkle said in an email.

Baltimore County Police have arrested a 17-year-old Woodlawn boy in the shooting of a man near Security Square Mall on Friday night. Rickey Jerome Freeman, of the 7500 block of Reserve Circle, has been charged with attempted first-degree murder and with using a firearm in the commission of a violent crime, police said. Freeman allegedly shot the man, who has not been identified, on Security Boulevard near the entrance to the mall after an argument broke out between two groups, police said.

A 13-year-old Woodlawn High School student was struck by a passenger vehicle near the school Monday morning and transported by Medevac to Maryland Shock Trauma Center with life-threatening injuries, according to the Baltimore County police department. Trayvon Shallomar Gore-Cromer, of the 1800 block of Alto Vista Avenue, was in serious condition Monday afternoon, said a Shock Trauma spokeswoman. Officers first responded to a call at 7:15 a.m. Monday about a male struck by a vehicle on Dogwood Road near the school, said Louise Rogers-Feher, a police spokeswoman.

Sonya Reinhart, a longtime supervisor in the Social Security Administration's Office of Disability Operations who had been a child actress, died July 18 of a massive coronary at Sinai Hospital. The Owings Mills resident was 82. The daughter of a tailor and a homemaker, Sonya Benjamin was born in Baltimore and raised on North Avenue. When she was 3, Mrs. Reinhart, who could sing and dance, became a member of Uncle Jack's Kiddie Club, which performed at the Hippodrome Theatre.

About 20 homes in Woodlawn were evacuated Saturday afternoon after a gas meter leak was discovered, officials said. The gas leak was discovered at about noon in the 1500 block of Kellys Court in Baltimore County, officials said. The leak was secured by 12:48 p.m. and the residents were able to return to their homes shortly after. No one was injured in the incident, officials said. ywenger@baltsun.com

A Baltimore County man who was shot outside his Woodlawn home early Friday morning died several hours later at the hospital, police said. Keyon Donte Henry, 19, and a friend were standing outside his home in the 2700 block of Claybrooke Drive when another man approached them and shot at Henry just before 1 a.m., police said. Henry was taken to Maryland Shock Trauma Center where he later died the same day. Police said the suspect fled on foot. Anyone with information should contact police at 410-307-2020.

Some days, Mike Sye still leaves his office with his head spinning. There's been so much to learn that Sye is still getting to know people and getting comfortable with procedures a year after he officially became coordinato of athletics for the Baltimore County Public Schools, the top job in running one of Maryland's - and one of the nation's - biggest scholastic sports programs. He oversees every aspect of competitive athletics in the county's 24 high schools. Like his predecessor Ron Belinko, who retires Friday after 21 years, including ayear as a consultant to help Sye make the transition, Sye likes to be hands-on.
