A 19-year-old woman was raped by an unknown man as she walked on a path in the Village of Long Reach in Columbia on Thursday evening, Howard County police said yesterday. Police said the woman was walking along the trail near Majors Lane about 5 p.m. when she was approached from behind. Police said the suspect asked the victim for sex and when she refused, picked her up and carried her into the woods, where she was raped. In 2005, Howard County had 42 reported rapes, two more than in 2004.

A 24-year-old woman was raped Tuesday evening during a home invasion at a Woodlawn apartment, Baltimore County police said. About 11:15 p.m., six men wearing masks or bandannas entered the apartment in the 2000 block of Summit Ave., police said. Electronic items were stolen during the incident, police said. Two men - ages 23 and 24 - were in the apartment at the time of the attack, according to police. The woman, who was not a resident of the apartment, was taken to Greater Baltimore Medical Center and treated for her injuries, police said.

A 35-year-old Lutherville woman was raped and tied up yesterday morning and a female neighbor was bound by a man who forced his way into their homes in the quiet neighborhood, Baltimore County police said. The home invasions were reported about 20 minutes apart and left neighbors rattled. The first took place about 10:40 a.m. in the 1600 block of Pickett Road, where the woman was raped. The second occurred about 11 a.m. six blocks away in the first block of Seminary Ave., police said. The second victim -- a 66-year-old woman who was also home alone -- was not raped, said Bill Toohey, a county police spokesman.

Baltimore County police are searching for a man who they say raped and tortured a 56-year-old woman he picked up in Fells Point on July 4. Police said the woman was raped, beaten and burned with an iron for several hours. The woman said she got into the man's vehicle, described as an older model red car, in the 200 block of S. Broadway in Baltimore about 9:30 p.m. Police think she was driven to a house in the eastern part of the county, where the attack occurred. "She met the man and agreed to drive with him," said Bill Toohey, a police spokesman.

A woman was raped Sunday afternoon by a knife-wielding man who shoved her into the back of her van in the parking lot of Glen Burnie Mall in the 6700 block of Ritchie Highway, Anne Arundel County police said.The woman told police she was attacked about 3: 20 p.m. She was treated at North Arundel Hospital and released, police said.Police are looking for a black male in his late 30s, approximately 6 feet 1 inch tall, between 180 and 200 pounds, with facial hair on his chin, very short dark hair or a shaved head, and wearing faded blue jeans and a light-colored shirt.

A rookie Baltimore County police officer was suspended without pay yesterday and jailed after he and another man were accused of raping a woman in the officer's Owings Mills apartment, police said.Kyle Alexander Wilson, 28, was charged with first-degree rape, said police spokesman Bill Toohey. Wilson had been an officer for less than a year and was still on probation, Toohey said. He was a patrol officer in the Woodlawn precinct.According to police documents, two women and a man arrived at Wilson's apartment early Tuesday morning.
