A 31-year-old woman was raped by four men who accosted her early yesterday as she walked in the dark along Nabbs Creek Road in Pasadena, county police said.The attack occurred in the 600 block of Nabbs Creek Road just after 2: 30 a.m. The woman ran to a house to call for help after the men fled, she told police.Officers searched the area with a dog but did not find the attackers. The woman, who was treated at North Arundel Hospital, could not give police a detailed description of the men.Pub Date: 6/19/97

In more than a decade of academic work, Brandy M. Britton earned a doctorate in sociology from the University of California at San Francisco, established an expertise in women's studies and founded the Institute for Women and Girls Health Research out of her Ellicott City home. Howard County police allege that she also ran another business from her tidy beige house: a prostitution service with hourly rates of $300 and up. The former University of Maryland, Baltimore County assistant professor of sociology and anthropology was charged this week with four counts of prostitution.

A South Baltimore woman was arrested Tuesday night and charged with attacking a security officer at a Jamesway store after taking some videotapes without paying for them, county police said.A security officer at the store in the 4200 block of Postal Court said he saw a woman enter the store shortly after 8 p.m. and take four videos from the shelf. The officer told police that the woman left the store without paying for the items, valued at a total of $77.The officer said he followed the woman and identified himself as a security officer.

A 43-year-old Carroll County woman was sentenced yesterday to three years in prison for her 10th drunken-driving offense. Besides receiving the maximum term for her May conviction for driving under the influence, Brenda Lee Sawyer was given two consecutive one-year sentences for driving with a revoked license and leaving the scene of an injury accident. Those sentences were suspended. Sawyer was sentenced for crashing her vehicle into the rear of a state police car and fleeing into a wooded area in November - less than three weeks after she had been released from jail on probation from a previous drunken-driving offense.

A woman who tried to shoplift five cartons of cigarettes from a store in the Sisko Automotive Center store Tuesday afternoon fled before she could be taken into custody, county police said.A security officer at the store in the 5800 block of Southern Maryland Blvd. observed the woman enter the restroom shortly after 5:30 p.m. When the woman emerged, the security officer noticed bulges under her coat, police said.As she was leaving, a clerk and the security officer ordered the woman back into the store, where they recovered the cigarettes.

A 40-year-old woman walking in West Baltimore was attacked by three men and raped late last night, Baltimore police said.The woman told investigators she was approached by three men at 11:50 p.m. in the 1300 block of N. Carey St., said Agent Doug Price, a police spokesman. The men offered to buy her a drink, and when she refused, they grabbed her and pulled her into a vacant house.The woman said one of the men raped her there, Agent Price said. After the attack, the woman ran out of the house and called police.

A homeless woman who police say abducted a 3-year-old girl yesterday may have wanted to use the toddler to generate sympathy while panhandling in downtown Baltimore, city police said.Police said the woman was with a male friend who was supposed to be watching the child, identified as Patrice Barr. When the man stopped in a store on Fayette Street, the woman ran off with Patrice, according Baltimore Police Agent Ragina L. Cooper.Investigators said Anita Davis, 29, of Baltimore was charged in a warrant with abduction.

A woman's purse was stolen after she was accosted by two people outside a bank at Owen Brown Village Center in the 7200 block of Cradlerock Way Thursday night, police said.The woman told police she was confronted by the pair at 11:15 p.m., with one of them grabbing her purse and struggling with her until its strap broke, police said.The suspects then fled to the Owen Brown Place parking lot, where they got into a gold car, possibly a Chrysler LeBaron, police said.One is described by police as a black youth, 13 or 14 years old, about 140 pounds and wearing a matching blue checked shirt and shorts.

A Baltimore woman was arrested Sunday morning in the theft of $150 worth of merchandise from the Hechinger store in the 6700 block of Ritchie Highway, police said.A store security officer told police a woman came in about 11 a.m. and took light fixtures and brass wall switches from a display. The woman went to a cashier and tried to exchange the items for cash, police said.As the security officer approached the register, the woman ran ++ out of the store with the merchandise and drove off in a truck.

A masked man grabbed a Columbia woman as she walked to her apartment building and took her cash early Friday, Howard County police said.The victim was not injured in the robbery in the 12200 block of Green Meadow Drive in Columbia's Harper's Choice village. The suspect did not show a weapon, police said.According to police reports, the woman had just parked her car about 12:30 a.m. Friday when the suspect jumped from bushes and demanded her money.After the woman screamed, the suspect grabbed at her purse.

Police search for man wanted in rape caseHoward County police were searching last night for a man wanted in the rape of a 27-year-old Jessup woman early yesterday.The woman was treated at Howard County General Hospital and released, police said.Police said the victim met two men at The Place in Odenton late Sunday night.After socializing, the three got into a gray BMW belonging to one of the men and drove to a Denny's restaurant on Maryland 175 in Anne Arundel County, police said.At least an hour later, the three left the restaurant and drove into Howard County.

County police arrested a man and woman from Baltimore Sunday and charged them with stealing cigarettes from a Brooklyn Park 7-Eleven. Police also filed drug charges against the woman.Donna Taylor, a clerk at the store, in the 4000 block of Ritchie Highway, told police a man and a woman walked in shortly after 3 a.m. The man asked for two cartons of cigarettes.Ms. Taylor got them, the man grabbed them and the couple ran out the door, heading west on Belle Grove Road toward Edgevale Road, police said.

A Silver Spring woman was sentenced Monday to nine years in prison for deliberately driving into a Howard County police detective who was investigating her scheme to bilk $3,000 from a Columbia finance company.Patricia Felecia Myers, 43, was given the prison term after she begged Howard Circuit Judge Raymond Kane Jr. to temper his obligation to punish her with mercy."This [incident] has destroyed me," said Myers, fighting back tears. "I've lost everything I had. . . . I lost my freedom."Myers accepted a plea agreement in April for assault with intent to maim and attempted theft for the Dec. 8 incident outside the Household Finance Center in Columbia's Town Center.

A woman who was threatened with rape at gunpoint early yesterday turned the tables on her attacker by grabbing the gun, firing a shot through a window of the car he was driving, then attracting the attention of police with more gunshots, police said.The woman told Anne Arundel County Police that she met the man at the Crossroads Tavern in Glen Burnie Saturday night, and accepted his offer of a ride home. But en route, the man drew a .38-caliber revolver and told her "you're mine," police said.

A 24-year-old woman ran for help after a man followed her into the restroom of an office building in Columbia's Oakland Mills village Friday. He fit the description of a man suspected of attacks on four Howard County women in the past two weeks, one of them a rape.Howard County police said no one was injured in the 9 a.m. encounter in the 6300 block of Woodside Court, in the Hillcroft Executive Park just east of U.S. 29, but detectives are investigating to determine whether there is a link to the other cases.
