girls basketball Player of the Year Nyree Williams, Howard The 6-foot-1 senior forward brought a powerful inside game to the Lions, but she was also a strong defensive presence. With her quickness and long arms, she gave even the slipperiest small guards trouble on the defensive end. On offense, Williams excelled in the paint and was particularly difficult to stop on the offensive rebounds. She averaged 17.6 points, 14.3 rebounds, three blocks and three steals. Williams, who is headed to North Carolina, led the Lions to the best record in school history, 20-5, and a second-place finish in the Howard County league.

With four 6-footers on the floor, last night's girls basketball game between No. 6 River Hill and No. 11 Howard figured to be a battle on the inside, but the Hawks' guards stole the show. Shantrel Oliver and Vanessa Collier combined for 38 points to lead host River Hill to a 67-41 victory in a Howard County league game. The Hawks (6-0 overall, 5-0 league) are the only unbeaten team remaining in the county. Oliver and Collier said there were two main keys to the victory - defense and taking it to the Lions' 6-footers: Nyree Williams and Brandi Wingate.
