From: California Price: $16 Serve with: Lamb, steak & kidney pie Randall Grahm of Bonny Doon Vineyards brings us his playful take on the style of red Bordeaux enjoyed in a fine old London club. It's a liquid repudiation of the huge, highly alcoholic blockbuster California cabernet sauvignons that Grahm apparently finds improper. This claret starts from a cabernet base, but skillful blending of petit verdot, petite sirah and tannat to achieve a most proper Bordeaux-like balance and a restrained alcohol level of 13.2 percent.

As in any major city, Baltimore and its bars benefit from a hot ticket. Whether it is the Orioles' opening day or a Justin Timberlake and Jay Z concert downtown, these events rarely fail to draw large crowds. In the process, many attendees find time to patronize bars in the neighborhoods they visit. In late February, it was easy to see similar stars aligning by the Hippodrome Theatre. As the multiple Tony Award-winning musical “The Book of Mormon” had a well-received 13-day run downtown, the Italian wine bar and restaurant Forno quietly opened around the same time.

From: California Price: $10 Serve with: Salmon, ham, fried chicken This popularly priced chardonnay is part of a new label launched by the Delicato wine group. This chardonnay should be a winner, and that's coming from someone who normally isn't blown away by California chardonnays. This medium-bodied white wine is just very well-balanced, with exactly the right proportions of oak and fruit. It's not ultra-complex. There are the standard chardonnay flavors of apple, lemon and white pepper.

From: California Price: $16 Serve with: Steak, lamb, pasta This intense, penetrating, spicy red wine is an excellent value in California cabernet. It offers bright black cherry and wild berry fruit and a touch of vanilla. At only two years, it makes for smooth and easy drinking but has the length and body of a much more expensive wine. It is sealed with a device known as a "zork" - a kind of cross between a cork and a screw cap that requires no corkscrew and is a little more elegant than the twist-off closure.

From: Livermore Valley, Calif. Price: $16 Serve with: Grilled red meat, pasta in red sauce Concannon is one of California's masters of petite sirah, one of the state's best but most underrated red wine grapes. This premium version, a step up from its high-value basic version, is exceptionally complex for its price. It's a full-bodied wine with intense flavors of chocolate, coffee, blackberry, herbs and that distinct dustiness that is characteristic of petite sirah. This wine is very easy to drink now but can age for a decade or more.
