DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. said yesterday that it would not make any of its Windstar minivans next week, citing a drop in dealer orders.The production cutback for the Windstar, which is less than a year old and has been one of Ford's most popular products, fanned fears among auto industry analysts that the market for new vehicles may be softening as interest rates climb.Ford's move followed a cutback in the production of its small cars, and a decision by Chrysler Corp. to postpone plans to increase the production of its small cars.

I suppose it is possible that, in 2010, when Ford sent safety recall notices to 492,000 owners of Windstar minivans because of a rear-axle problem, it missed Mr. Philip George of Ocean City , Md., whom everyone calls "Bill. " It is equally possible that, a year later, when Ford mailed 425,000 recall notices because of another Windstar safety problem, it missed him again. When a big company has problems on the scale of Ford's flawed Windstars of 1999 to 2003 — there were six recalls on the 2002 model alone — some customers just might never get the memo.

On May 14, 2004 JUDITH LEE SCOTT (nee Grund), our beloved wife, mother and grandmother was taken from us today after a long struggle with cancer. She will be greatly missed. Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Robert Scott, daughter and son-in-law Erica and Christopher Mink, daughters Kirsten and Samantha Scott, special niece Ashley Grund and granddaughter Angela Mink. She is also survived by her mother Mildred Frey, brother Gary Grund and sisters Patricia Frey, Katherine Troch and Peggy Kendsierski; as well as many loving extended family members and friends.

A sport utility vehicle collided head-on with a minivan early yesterday on Route 543 near Bel Air, sending a Bel Air man and a Connecticut family of five to area hospitals with serious injuries, state police said. The 8 a.m. accident occurred after a man, 26, fell asleep at the wheel of a northbound Chevrolet Blazer, police said. The Blazer skidded over the yellow line and struck a Ford Windstar carrying a Connecticut couple and their three boys, police said. A Nissan Sentra then rear-ended the Windstar, police said.

Tapping on the keys of a Macintosh computer at Stevens Forest Elementary School in east Columbia, fifth-grader Allison Bohac types the names of 16 animals endangered in Maryland, including the peregrine falcon and the hawksbill turtle.The environmentally aware 10-year-old is a member of the school's chapter of the Windstar Foundation, the only student chapter of the international environmental group, said Ellen Gallagher, a Windstar coordinator in New Haven, Conn.Established by singer John Denver and his friend Tom Crum in Snowmass, Colo.

THE ENTHUSIASM of youth and the hope of spring are epitomized in third-graders Emily Kay and Christina Boussy, who invite everyone to join them in planting 500 seedlings, saplings and container-grown plants.The Stevens Forest students' project to beautify and protect the environment is in partnership with the Howard County Department of Parks, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Colorado-based Plant-it 2000 and Windstar Connection, which was co-founded by singer John Denver.The local project began when gifted and talented students, under the direction of teacher Tom Stabile, organized a chapter of Windstar Connection -- the very first Windstar student chapter, they say. Windstar aims to involve people in the environment, global illiteracy, hunger and refugee relocation.

The Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari, midsize vans made in Baltimore, fared poorly in 40-mph crash tests conducted by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, according to results released today.There was major occupant compartment damage in the frontal offset test, in which the vehicle hits a barrier at an angle. According to the institute, this best replicates the most common form of highway accidents. Injury measurements for the Astro and Safari indicated the possibility of left upper leg injury and the likelihood of lower leg injury.

The General Motors Corp. van assembly plant in Baltimore posted a modest 2.35 percent gain in productivity last year, but it still uses more workers than its primary competitors to build each vehicle, according to a study by an automotive research group.The study, conducted by Troy, Mich.-based Harbour & Associates Inc., concluded that the local plant used 3.73 workers per vehicle to build its Chevrolet Astro and GMC Safari vans last year, down from 3.82 workers per vehicle in 1995.In 1995, the Broening Highway plant posted a 5 percent boost in productivity, which was 18th-best performance of the 74 car and truck plants in the United States, Canada and Mexico last year, according to the annual Harbour Report.
