The man identified by German authorities as a cellmate of the former U.S. soldier from Baltimore who has been implicated by DNA evidence in the rape and murder of a young woman in Germany in 1984 vehemently denied yesterday that the accused man bragged to him about committing the crime. Reached at his home in Lansdowne, Pa., the cellmate, Arnold J. Winder, disputed the account of German authorities. Those authorities say they interviewed Winder in 1988 at the federal building in Harrisburg, where Winder allegedly said that Robert L. Brown Jr. "admitted to him the charges against him and had boasted about it."

One city police officer stood 11 feet from an armed robber who shot at him -- and missed -- with a powerful handgun that could pierce bullet-resistant vests. Another officer rushed to an armed robbery at a McDonald's in North Baltimore and tackled a suspect. And, in a tragic case, Officer Brian D. Winder was fatally shot while investigating a report of a domestic dispute in Southwest Baltimore. Stories of bravery and sacrifice were recounted yesterday at the Baltimore Police Department's annual awards ceremony.
