On March 20, 2006, DOROTHY A. WINCHESTER, beloved mother of Gloria, Harace, Perry and Kenneth (Abdul)Mrs. Winchester will lie in state on Friday at Community Baptist Church, 5912 Belle Grove Rd. (Pumphery) 1 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. Christian Wake 6:30 with funeral to follow at 7:30. Interment Saturday at Arbutus Memorial Park. Funeral entrusted to the Oden Funeral Services.

1710: Westminster founder born The founder of Westminster, William Winchester, was born in London on Dec. 22, 1710. Winchester came to America in 1729. He began purchasing tracts, which would eventually become Westminster, in 1754. Winchester surveyed the land into lots in 1764. The town was originally called Winchester in honor of its founder but was changed to Westminster by the Maryland General Assembly to avoid confusion with other towns of the same name - most notably, Winchester, Va. Seated at a check-in table stationed in the school's foyer, Markeya Nardini and Domenique Miller are consummate hostesses - and ardent advocates - on the day that Carroll County school officials had chosen to focus on an increasingly popular after-school program. The two girls are wild about the Community Learning Centers program, which enables them to get help with their homework, play games that reinforce lessons they have learned in classes and join after-school clubs. "You have teachers here helping you with your work, and they understand it because they taught it to you during the day," Markeya, 10, a fifth-grader at Willliam Winchester Elementary in Westminster, offers with little prodding.

CURT ALFRED HERBERT JESCHKE, age 85, of Catonsville, MD, died Sunday, August 21, 2005, in a local nursing home. Mr. Jeschke was born on March 14, 1920, in Baltimore, MD, the son of the late Alfred W. and Anna Moller Jeschke. He was a senior partner of Purdum and Jeschke, civil engineering consultants. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church of Baltimore City and Baltimore Polytechnic Institute Alumni Association. Mr. Jeschke graduated from the University of Maryland with Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering.

On a block in Sandtown-Winchester cooled by a canopy of sycamores, Mary Day-Smith fills brick planters with pansies, marigolds, coleus, petunias, salvia and begonias. Mary, 10, has grown very attached to the flowers and vegetable plants that have transformed her West Baltimore neighborhood into a verdant oasis. "It's like our own children; that's how fun it is to plant flowers," says Mary, who is working with other kids under the guidance of neighbors Justine Bonner and Barbara Love. Soon, the kids will follow another elder, Rudolph Boston, around the corner to a large community garden plot where he will show them how to sow peanuts.

RICHARD W. CRAWFORD, 66, of Baltimore, MD, formerly of Keyser, WV, died Tuesday, January 25, 2005 at his residence. Mr. Crawford was retired as a surveyor with Purdum and Jeskle Surveyors in Baltimore with over 30 years of service. Surviving are his life long companion, Shirley Sears of Baltimore; five brothers, Raymond Crawford of Winchester, VA, Floyd Crawford of Keyser, WV, Charles Crawford of Vinton, VA and Johnny and Donald Crawford of Winchester Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel, on Saturday, January 29 from 12:00 until 2:00 P.M. Funeral Services will be conducted at the funeral home chapel at 2:00 P.M. Interment will be in the Duling Cemetery, Keyser.
