The title of "Genius on the Edge: The Bizarre Double Life of Dr. William Stewart Halsted" suggests that Johns Hopkins' renowned first chief of surgery lived a hidden and unsavory existence in roughly the Jekyll-and-Hyde time frame. (Halsted was born in 1852, and died in 1922; Robert Louis Stevenson published his novel in 1886.) Actually, Dr. Gerald Imber's unpredictable and unflappable biography, an intrigue-filled life story that's also a sweeping pop medical history, depicts an individual who was two different kinds of good - make that, great - doctor.

Before there was Bewitched or Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, there was Bell, Book and Candle, an enchanting romantic comedy by John Van Druten about a modern-day witch who falls under the spell of an ordinary mortal. At Cockpit in Court's cabaret theater, director Vince Kimball has tossed in a host of updated references to everything from reality TV shows to e-mail and cell phones. The references blend in beautifully - an indication, perhaps, of the immense pleasure it would be to cast an evil spell on any of the above.

Crouch, spring, twirl, land. Time and again, the vivacious little girl with springs for legs bounced from the top step in her mother's house to the first-floor landing. Crouch, spring, twirl, land. Ten years later, balanced on the razor-thin edges of her ice skates, Megan Williams-Stewart is still trying to master those bursts of kinetic energy. But now the leaps have names like Axel and toe loop and her audience is much more critical than Rolly, the family Dalmatian. On Friday afternoon, the 15-year-old from Ellicott City will skate to a tango before thousands at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Dallas.
