The Maryland football team is tentatively scheduled to open the 2012 season at home on Sept. 1 vs William & Mary, followed by games at Temple on  Sept. 8, home against Connecticut on  Sept. 15 and at West Virginia on Sept. 22. The matchups have not yet been officially announced by the Atlantic Coast Conference, but the schedule is far enough along that the school has been given nonconference opponents and dates. Sheree Ledbetter scored with four-tenths of a second remaining to give Towson a 77-75 win over William & Mary on Thursday at the Towson Center. The Tigers (11-4, 2-2 Colonial Athletic Association) ended a two-game losing streak with their fourth win this season in the final 10 seconds of play. "I'm proud of the way we responded," said coach Joe Mathews. "You can't simulate [late game situations] in practice. This league is full of close games, and our team is really confident that if we have the ball at the end of the game we can find a way to win. One day, not long from now, this season will seem like nothing more than a foggy unpleasant memory to the Towson basketball team. With a highly touted recruiting class on the way and a state-of-the-art arena in the pipeline this program's better days surely lie ahead. For now, however, the nightmare that is the 2011-12 season continues to fester, and the latest example was Wednesday's 66-49 loss to unheralded William & Mary before a small gathering at the Towson Center. After scoring a season-low 27 points on Wednesday and tying a Division I record, Towson set a new one by shooting 31 percent and falling to host Old Dominion, 75-38, Saturday night. The Tigers (0-16, 0-4 Colonial Athletic Association) now own the NCAA Division I record for consecutive losses with 35. New Jersey Institute of Technology set the overall record of 51, but did it when transitioning from Division II to Division I. The Monarchs (8-8, 3-1) converted 22 turnovers into 37 points.

Wagner played a huge role on both sides of the ball in helping No. 3 Old Mill (14-0) to a 36-35 overtime victory over Quince Orchard in Friday's Class 4A state championship. The 5-foot-7, 158-pound slot receiver and cornerback scored two touchdowns - one on a 64-yard pass reception and another on a fumble recovery. He had six catches for 138 yards and also had nine tackles and one interception. Wagner finished the season with nine interceptions and 56 tackles as well as 35 receptions for 747 yards and 10 touchdowns.

Colleges Hopkins, Salisbury fend off NCAA baseball elimination The Johns Hopkins baseball team overcame two lengthy rain delays to stave off elimination for the second-straight day as the sixth-seeded Blue Jays defeated eighth-seeded Catholic, 7-2, on Friday to knock the Cardinals out of the NCAA Division III Mid-Atlantic Regional in Lakewood, N.J., and advance in the losers' bracket. Hopkins improves to 27-14 with the victory; Catholic's season ended at 23-20. Mike Musary and Joe Borrelli paced the Blue Jays with three hits and two RBIs apiece.

Freshman Julian Boatner scored a career-high 22 points, including six 3-pointers, as visiting William & Mary rolled to its second consecutive victory, 83-68, over host Towson on Wednesday night. The Tribe (6-12, 2-5 Colonial Athletic Association) made 14 3-pointers and connected on a season-high 55.8 percent from the field against the Tigers (4-13, 0-7). Boatner made six of seven 3-point attempts against Towson and connected on four of five free throws. He was one of six Tribe players to make at least one 3-point basket.

After Maryland's opening game, coach Gary Williams resisted lavishing too much attention on promising guard Pe'Shon Howard or Maryland's other first-year players. "This is one game," was the coach's mantra then. After the season's second game Wednesday night, it proved increasingly challenging for Williams not to single out Howard for praise. Capping a night in which he repeatedly made big plays, the confident freshman swished in a basket with three seconds left to lift Maryland to a 75-74 victory over College of Charleston.
