When Guy W. Willey Sr. was growing up, he hunted and ate Delmarva fox squirrels in the low-lying forests of the Eastern Shore, long before it was clear the giant cousins of the common gray squirrel were in danger of disappearing. He was "dirt poor," he recalled, and lots of folks did it back then. Now, at 83, he's been invited to Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge on Friday, when federal officials are expected to announce the squirrel has bounced back from the brink of extinction and is no longer in need of legal protection.

In their current production of Out of Order, the Bowie Community Theatre folks have moved British playwright Ray Cooney's 1990 comic farce about Parliament member Richard Willey's arranging a weekend tryst with secretary Jane Worthington from the British Parliament to today's U.S. Congress, where Richard now is a Republican senator and Jane a member of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's secretarial pool. The best thing that happened to this year's North Harford field hockey team happened last year when the soccer team cut Chrissy Jones. Jones didn't play any sports last year after not making soccer, but coach Lori Mitchell pushed her to consider field hockey. Jones eventually agreed, went to field hockey camp over the summer and has done a strong job this season as the Hawks' goalie. TAYLORS ISLAND-- --The crab is bursting. Slowly, it kicks its legs and thrusts forward, pushing and writhing. In a matter of minutes, it wriggles out of its shell, its bluish skin soft as Jell-O. Bonnie Willey doesn't have much time before the crab hardens again. The tiny redhead plucks the crab from its plywood tank, plops it onto newsprint lining an old milk crate, and puts the crate in a walk-in cooler. She carries out this ritual as she has dozens of times a day, thousands of times every summer, for the past 20 years.
