COLLEGE PARK - Maryland tailback Wes Brown could hardly have had a more eventful day. Coaches clearly increased the freshman's workload Saturday to try to take some of the pressure off Shawn Petty , who was making his first start at quarterback. Brown, the team's leading rusher, carried nine times for 38 yards in the 33-13 loss to Georgia Tech, and he was the central figure in a new "Wild Crab" package Maryland developed last week in practice. With the Terps lacking a true quarterback, pundits had wondered if the team might use a wildcat formation.

Wilde Lake lineman Moise Larose decommitted from Rutgers on Thursday night and has committed to play for Maryland, according to Wildecats coach Mike Harrison. The 6-foot-5, 285-pound Larose was an All-State and second-team All-Metro offensive lineman last season, but he has been even more impressive on the defensive side of the ball this fall. Larose had committed to Rutgers as an offensive tackle, but Harrison said last month that the coach had been getting a lot of calls from college coaches who would rather see him on their defensive lines.

Annapolis Mayor Joshua Cohen filed a police complaint Tuesday after catching a 68-year-old man, pants at his ankles, urinating off the third floor parking deck of a garage behind City Hall. "If it would have been three in the morning, I might have looked the other way," Cohen said. "But it was three in the afternoon, in broad daylight. " The man told the mayor he was "following the call of the wild" when confronted mid-stream and then cursed at Cohen's recommendation of using public restrooms nearby, according to the police report.

An All-State lineman on the offensive side of the ball last season, Wilde Lake's Moise Larose may be even more impressive this fall on the defensive side. The 6-foot-5, 285-pound senior has committed to Rutgers as an offensive tackle, but Wildecats coach Mike Harrison is getting plenty of calls from college coaches who would rather see Larose on their defensive lines next fall. Larose, who played his first three seasons at Meade before transferring to Wilde Lake when his family moved over the summer, leads the Wildecats (3-3)

Here are some quotes from the Orioles after their 5-1 victory over the Texas Rangers to advance to the AL Division Series. Jim Johnson on celebrating victory: “It's a lot of fun obviously. Just doing all that hard work we put in from the beginning, even from a couple years ago, it's all worth it. Now we are just trying to reap the rewards and see where it takes us. We're just going to try and compete and see where it takes us.” Johnson on going back to Baltimore to play: “It's going to be fun. It's going to be an incredible atmosphere.

Here's a look at how our Orioles Insiders see tonight's American League wild-card playoff against the Rangers shaking out: Eduardo A. Encina Orioles 5, Rangers 3 This is the kind of matchup up that Orioles manager Buck Showalter enjoys, a one-game, winner-take-all fight to the final out. And his team will relish it, too. Every time the Orioles seem to be out this season, they come charging back. Expect Showalter's wild-card roster to be packed with relievers so he can utilize matchup advantages. If the suddenly silent bats show up, the Orioles are coming home for the ALDS. Dan Connolly Orioles 7, Rangers 6 There's absolutely no logical reason for this pick.

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Orioles and Rangers announced their rosters for tonight's one-game American League wild-card playoff at Rangers Ballpark. Not a lot of surprises. Orioles manager Buck Showalter will have 10 relievers to pick from tonight in relief of left-handed starter Joe Saunders. Because the Orioles can submit a new roster before Sunday's first ALDS game, if they win tonight and continue their season, Friday's roster was expected to be reliever heavy and starting pitcher short - and it is. Here are the non-injured players who are here but didn't make this roster: Xavier Avery, Wei-Yin Chen, Miguel Gonzalez, Chris Tillman. The Rangers have included lefty starters Matt Harrison and Derek Holland, in case they need them for a matchup or an inning.

This isn't the way the Orioles wanted it - forced to go through Arlington for a one-game wild card playoff to get to the American League Division Series - but I like the O's chances in Texas on Friday night. Maybe it's delirium from a lack of sleep -- my flight leaves for Texas in about five hours -- but I've gotta think that Orioles manager Buck Showalter loves this kind of winner-take-all matchup. All signs point to Showalter turning to rookie right-hander Steve Johnson to start Friday's game.
