Wide Receiver

Lee Evans finally got a chance to do what he does best. The Ravens wide receiver caught his first pass in nine games, an eight-yard grab in Thursday night's 16-6 win against the San Francisco 49ers. One reception isn't usually cause for celebration, but for Evans, who sat out seven consecutive games because of a nagging left ankle injury, his contribution was a reminder of his future, not his past. “Everything else is behind us, and me in my situation, being hurt, I'm putting it behind me and moving forward,” he said.

Veteran wide receiver Anquan Boldin, who was added to the injury report yesterday with a knee injury, was again not practicing this morning. Boldin was seemingly fine coming out of Sunday's loss to the San Diego Chargers, and he was out on the practice field Tuesday. However, today would mark his second consecutive missed practice leading into Saturday's game against the Cleveland Browns. Kicker Billy Cundiff also was not practicing because of his left calf injury. The Ravens signed veteran Shayne Graham yesterday and he's expected to kick Saturday with Cundiff getting at least one week off. Defensive end Cory Redding also was missing from practice today.

Last week, Lee Evans practiced Wednesday, Thursday and Friday on a limited basis, but the Ravens elected to deactivate him for Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks. The wide receiver, who has sat out seven consecutive games due to a left ankle injury, took part in the portion of Wednesday's session open to the media. Prior to practice, he sounded hopeful that he might be able to return for Sunday's home contest against AFC North rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals. “Hopefully, it progresses better than it did last week,” Evans said.

When coach John Harbaugh announced last week that Anquan Boldin was undergoing surgery to repair a slightly torn meniscus in his knee, Harbaugh said the Ravens wide receiver would not return until the playoffs at the earliest. Boldin is accelerating that timetable a bit as he has no longer been ruled out by the team for Sunday's regular-season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals. The team described Boldin as having participated on a limited basis in Friday's practice and changed his designation from out to doubtful.

Kevin Johnson has decided to opt out of the final year of his contract, a league source close to the situation said yesterday, leaving the Ravens with a void at wide receiver that they likely will have to fill through the draft or free agency. Neither Johnson nor his agent, Tom Condon, could be reached to comment, but the source said Johnson will notify the Ravens soon that he plans to test the free-agent market and forgo his $1.4 million salary. The source said Johnson has a desire to play in a more pass-oriented offense.

Lee Evans was targeted just once in the Ravens' 24-16 win against the Cincinnati Bengals Sunday, but he dropped an opportunity to have a big impact on the contest. On third down-and-8 from the offense's 40-yard line midway through the second quarter, quarterback Joe Flacco took the snap in the shotgun. Evans appeared to beat the cornerback down the right hash, and Flacco launched a deep pass that bounced off Evans' fingertips and fell to the turf at Paul Brown Stadium. After the game, a chagrined Evans blamed himself for the gaffe.

Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith returned to his old high school, Stafford High (Va.), tonight and he brought plenty of his friends. His Ravens' teammates - Ray Rice, Tyrod Taylor, LaQuan Williams, Bryan Hall, Terrence Cody and Anthony Allen - are on hand for the second annual Torrey Smith and Anthony Armstrong All-Star Basketball game. Proceeds from the game - and it is a packed house - benefit Smith and Armstrong's foundations.  "It's amazing the progress we've made as a team and as a community," Smith said.

Before Sunday's 24-9 win over the Indianapolis Colts, wide receiver Anquan Boldin, not a man of many words, approached quarterback Joe Flacco and told him he that had 200 receiving yards in him. "I don't know if he thought I was joking," Boldin said. "But he gave me a shot in the second half. " After being held without a catch for most of the first half, Boldin was involved early and often in the second half, catching all five passes Flacco threw his way while establishing a new franchise single-game playoff record with 145 receiving yards.

As we await Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome's arrival, several of the draft's wide receiver prospects have completed their media responsibilities. One intriguing option, who could be available to the Ravens in the middle-to-late rounds, is Georgia Tech wide receiver Stephen Hill. Playing in the Yellow Jackets' run-oriented offense, Hill's stats certainly don't stand out as he caught 28 passes for 820 yards. But his size -- 6 feet 6, 206 pounds -- and his speed -- he believes he can run a 4.3 40-yard dash -- will certainly garner some attention.
