The Ravens may lack experience at the wide receiver position, but they certainly don't lack depth. How much quality exists within that depth remains to be seen. The Ravens' roster currently includes 13 wide receivers, but nine of them have never caught a pass in an NFL game. Only two of them - Anquan Boldin and the recently-signed Jacoby Jones - have played for more than one season. Seven of them were undrafted and none of them were taken in the first round. That's why when training camp starts in mid-July, the battle to secure one of the final one or two wide receiver spots might be one of the most hotly-contested competitions in camp.

The Ravens signed David Tyree on Tuesday afternoon after working out the free-agent wide receiver Monday. Tyree, 29, who spent six seasons with the Giants, is best remembered for making a leaping 32-yard catch by pinning the football against his helmet on New York's game-winning drive in the 2008 Super Bowl. "We've been looking at David Tyree for weeks now," coach John Harbaugh said during his weekly radio program on WBAL (1090 AM) on Tuesday evening. "He came out of training camp with a couple of issues, and he's been working hard to get those things healthy.

The life of a Navy football player usually reflects the regimented daily grind of a typical midshipman. There is one major difference: on the field, the route taken by many of Ken Niumatalolo's players is not always like an early morning march, a ramrod straight line from Point A to Point B. Shawn Lynch's path to Saturday's game at Penn State is not unusual. The soft-spoken junior has Ping-Ponged from offense to defense and back again. Lynch climbed the depth chart to become a starter at safety last season, only to disappear amid a blur of blue and gold uniforms on the sideline.

Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith appears to not only have good taste in jewelry but also to be engaged to his lady love. Smith (@TorreySmithWR) posted this update on Twitter late Friday afternoon: "Gave @LibraLadii_ this now she will be stuck with me for a long time. " The post was accompanied by a link to Smith's Instagram feed, which did indeed show a hand with a dazzling ring on it. According to Twitter, the hand - and the ring - belong to Chanel Williams, who is listed as the owner of the Twitter handle @LibraLadii_.

Devin Burns - a former wide receiver who filled in at quarterback for Maryland last season after a spate of injuries at the position - has withdrawn from the school and is expected to transfer. Burns, who was in his third season last fall, would have faced a logjam of quarterbacks on the depth chart in 2013. The presumed starter is C.J. Brown, who tore an anterior cruciate ligament while making a cut during a preseason practice last August. Burns volunteered to play quarterback after Brown's injury.

Lee Evans participated in his second consecutive day of practice on Friday, and the wide receiver is expected to line up in his usual starting spot opposite Anquan Boldin when the Ravens visit the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. Evans did not practice Wednesday and wore a protective boot around his left ankle, but he has not appeared limited or confined by the injury during the portions of practice open to the media. Coach John Harbaugh sounded quite optimistic about Evans' availability against the Titans.

Defensive back Isaac Goins, who just finished two years at California's Contra Costa College, has signed a letter of intent to play for the Terps. Goins will join the team in the spring and have two years of remaining eligibility. Goins was recently profiled by my colleague Matt Bracken in Recruiting Report . Here are some of the highlights from Matt's story to get you up to speed: *Maryland hasn't made a habit in recent years of recruiting junior college players, save for defensive back Michael Carter out of Erie (Pa.)

Lee Evans logged in a full week of practice, but the wide receiver is not expected to return Sunday against the Seattle Seahawks. Coach John Harbaugh said Friday that while he has been encouraged by Evans' progress from the left ankle injury that has shelved him for the past six contests, asking Evans to play at CenturyLink Field in Seattle under wet and cold conditions could be a bit much. “I think it's an outside chance right now,” Harbaugh said of Evans' status for Sunday.

The catches are tougher to come by this season for Chris Armstrong, and the breakout games come less often. But when the Baltimore Stallions waged a war of attrition at receiver last night, their big-play man helped deliver a wild 42-32 victory over the Shreveport Pirates at Memorial Stadium.Armstrong caught two touchdown passes in the second quarter and, with 105 yards on five catches, producing his third straight 100-yard receiving effort. It was significant on a night the Stallions lost two receivers -- Reggie Perry and Robert Clark -- to injuries and weathered a 29-point fourth-quarter Shreveport rally.

For former Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chris Henry, judgment came swiftly after he was charged with assault and criminal damaging after allegedly throwing a bottle and smashing the window of a car belonging to an 18-year-old college student and punching out the kid Monday night. Faster than you can say arraignment, the Bengals cut the tall, fast receiver whose arrest record would indicate that he has posed for more mug shots than team photos. As Popeye the Sailor Man would say, "Enough is enough and enough is too much!"
