Sit on the deck by the Whitehurst pool and you get two things: a view that stretches to Kent Island, and a good idea of why people who live in this Anne Arundel County community describe it as living in summer camp. Whitehurst sits on the Magothy River, near where Cattail Creek enters it. The social center of the community is its outdoor waterfront pool - which couldn't be built under current waterfront protection laws - and a clubhouse with year-round parties and activities.

Living up to outsized expectations has never been difficult for Clemson senior quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. The son of former NFL quarterback David Whitehurst, Charlie has done it nearly from the day he arrived on campus. He wound up starting five games as a freshman and began to make a name for himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the Atlantic Coast Conference as a sophomore. Last season, though, was different. After beating Wake Forest in the season opener, the Tigers lost four straight games before a late turnaround helped Clemson finish 6-5. After throwing for 288 yards and two touchdowns in a double overtime win over the Demon Deacons, Whitehurst struggled for much of the season, too. Any mention of Whitehurst as a Heisman candidate faded, as did any notion that he was going to turn pro after his junior year.

FEW WASHINGton employees suffer from a more odious legacy than the Federal Bureau of Investigation, whose pillbox-like headquarters on Pennsylvania Avenue still carries the name of its founder and director-for-life, J. Edgar Hoover.Unfortunately for the dedicated majority, there's still a small holdout corps of Hoover clones inside the building, as exemplified by the bureau's ham-handed conduct at Waco, Texas, and Ruby Ridge, Idaho, and the videotaped attendance of some FBI agents at a "no niggers" law officers' barbecue in Tennessee last summer.

Pat Whitehurst wears many outfits when he teaches his students. Sometimes he comes to school dressed as a Supreme Court justice to teach his law class. On another day, he donned an inmate's uniform to teach a lesson about prisons. And sometimes he just puts on a tie with a patriotic theme. "I stimulate my students by dressing up," said Whitehurst, who has been teaching Advanced Placement U.S. government and politics, freshman government, geography, sociology and law in America classes at Fallston High School since 2000.

In a clear voice, Zachary Novak read a biography of a fallen soldier. "Patrick Ryan Adle. Born March 18, 1983. Date of death: June 29, 2004. Cause of death: He was killed when the Humvee he was riding struck a landmine." When Novak finished, the next student read a biography of another soldier, until eight profiles of county residents killed in the line of duty in recent years were read. The activity, part of a Veterans Day program in government class at Fallston High School last week, struck a chord with Novak, a 17-year-old senior.

ATLANTA --Poor pay, long hours, and the contempt of many employees and customers - that pretty much sums up the job of running an airline these days. The only thing worse, for the management masochists who seek these positions, is living in daily fear that the job might be taken away. That's the life of Edward H. Bastian and James M. Whitehurst, the two executives running Delta Air Lines on a day-to-day basis. They both want to become Delta's next chief executive, if the airline is not gobbled up in a hostile takeover.

Six days before the NFL draft, there has been some speculation that a top quarterback such as Texas' Vince Young or Vanderbilt's Jay Cutler could fall to the middle of the first round. There's little question whom the Ravens are wishing for at No. 13. Young is the passer most coveted by the Ravens, a league source said. The Ravens, however, are realistic about the odds that Young or Cutler will last beyond the first dozen picks. "The chances that one of those guys would be there [at the 13th pick]
