A Rockville real estate investment trust said yesterday that it has made a major push into the Baltimore-area market, buying the high-profile The Avenue at White Marsh and two nearby retail complexes in a deal valued at $189 million in equity and debt. Federal Realty Investment Trust purchased The Avenue, White Marsh Plaza and the Shoppes at Nottingham Square from Towson-based Nottingham Properties Inc., which recently sold its office properties to another local REIT. Nottingham executives did not return calls seeking comment.

Louis J. Averella, a World War II merchant mariner who later was port agent and spokesman for the National Maritime Union, died in his sleep Tuesday at his home in Lady Lake, Fla. The former East Baltimore resident was 86. Mr. Averella, the son of Italian immigrants, was born in Baltimore and raised on Exeter Street. He attended city public schools. During World War II, he sailed on Liberty ships, and his decorations included the Atlantic War Zone Bar, Pacific War Zone Bar and Victory Medal.

A man was killed and two people were injured yesterday in a two-car collision in White Marsh, Baltimore County police said.Rudi Tahedl, 79, who lived in the 800 block of Branford Court in Timonium, was stopped at a traffic sign on westbound Ebenezer Road about 12: 38 p.m. when he entered the northbound lane of Philadelphia Road. He was struck on the driver's side by an oncoming vehicle, police said.Tahedl died a short time later at Franklin Square Hospital Center, police said. Tahedl's passenger, Lena Zapz, 68, of Essex, and the driver of the second vehicle, Ernest Preston, 46, of Joppa were in fair condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, a nursing supervisor said.

A pair of highway accidents -- including an overturned tanker truck and a separate crash that left a White Marsh man trapped beneath tons of metal in his truck-mounted crane -- snared motorists in traffic yesterday along Interstate 95 in Baltimore and Howard counties.In the worst of the two accidents, mid-morning traffic on southbound I-95 was backed up about two hours, from White Marsh to Mountain Road about eight miles away in Harford County.A crane careened off I-95 north of the Baltimore Beltway and skidded to a stop on its side, requiring rescuers to gingerly lift the heavy rig while they cut the driver free from the wreckage.

A tractor-trailer, traveling south on Interstate 95 to Baltimore City, jackknifed yesterday morning north of the Beltway near White Marsh, spilling hydrochloric acid and prompting heavy traffic delays for several hours, state police said.Witnesses told police that a Chevrolet Celebrity was stopped in the middle lane of the interstate about 7: 30 a.m. when it was struck from behind by a Dodge pickup truck and sent spinning into the far left lane. The tractor-trailer, carrying several 5-gallon containers of the highly corrosive acid, collided with the car, said Trooper Joseph Comer of the JFK Highway barracks.

A Baltimore County man died yesterday after plummeting 70 feet while climbing in Rocks State Park in Harford County.Maryland Department of Natural Resources spokesman John Surrick said Donato L. Mattie Olean Myers, a retired White Marsh restaurateur and caterer, died Sunday of heart failure at Franklin Square Hospital Center. She was 75 and lived in Chase.Known for her skills as a cook, she worked in the kitchen of Miller Brothers Restaurant on Fayette Street in Baltimore in the early 1940s and then at Lakeside Restaurant on U.S. 40 in Harford County.In 1958, she purchased Brown's Grove Inn, known as the Boat House, on Loreley Road at Gunpowder Falls in White Marsh. She also operated a catering business from the restaurant, serving such groups as the Jaycees and the Shriners, and private parties.

A 71-year-old man who apparently set his shirt on fire was found dead last night, slumped over the bathtub of his White Marsh home -- with the water running.The victim, identified as Joseph Kosyjana, was found dead by firefighters responding to a call from a neighbor about 9 p.m. in the 5600 block of Allender Road.Police said it appeared that Kosyjana had been standing near his gas stove, warming his hands, when his shirt caught fire. He apparently panicked, rushing to the bathroom to try to put the fire out, but passed out after turning on the water.
