Weeks of cold, brisk winter days lie ahead, weather that just begs to be spent in the company of a hot toddy - with or without the alcohol. A hot toddy can be as simple as coffee with some sinful hot chocolate mix or as involved as a hot drink frothed in a blender. Hot Chocolate Makes 1 serving 12 ounces fine chocolate 1 teaspoon butter (not margarine) 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup half-and-half whipped cream mini marshmallows Melt the chocolate, butter and vanilla in a double boiler.

Cynthia Dillon and Shiney Ann John stood outside Oakland Mills Middle School splattered with whipped cream and couldn't have been happier. The two administrators agreed that a pie-throwing contest - where up to 20 lucky students in each grade level got an opportunity to throw whipped cream pies - was the perfect way to end the school year. Students were picked during a raffle where they traded in tickets they had accumulated for good behavior throughout the year for a chance at a slew of prizes, including the pie-throwing contest.

How many calories are in my Starbucks white chocolate mocha Frappuccino? When there is no nutrition table attached to your food or drink, it's easy to shrug off nutrition. Personally, I always feel more guilty eating candy bars than a few homemade brownies because of that government nutrition chart staring me in the face. Depending on the size of your white chocolate mocha frapp -- and whether you take it with or without whipped cream -- your coffee treat runs anywhere from 240 to 580 calories.

Baby, it's cold outside. Ah, but wrap your hands around a mug of something warm, and the chill just melts away. Whether you're cuddling on the couch or cozying up to the bar, winter drinks are hot stuff this time of year. They come traditional or contemporary, hot or cold, alcoholic or non. And you can just as easily create them at home as you can order one. "They're really easy to make," said Tim Troup, bartender at Downtown 140 in Hudson, Ohio. Troup tends a packed bar almost every night, so he would know.

For many of us, warm gingerbread slathered with delicate dollops of whipped cream or teamed with sauteed apples or poached pears is comfort food at its all-time best. Not to be confused with the dense, brittle cookies cut into fanciful shapes, cake-style gingerbread is dark and moist, generally baked in square pans and served warm. For gingerbread fiends, the scent of warm cake redolent with ginger, molasses and cinnamon is one of life's great pleasures; the taste divine.Making gingerbread from scratch isn't at all complicated, but to ensure the best results, use the freshest and best ingredients available.

Starbucks 2400 Boston St., Baltimore -- 410-534-0563 Hours --5:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Mondays-Fridays; 6 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturdays-Sundays In and out in --6 minutes Here, we accepted the barista's offer to top the grande cider, $2.36, with some whipped cream. Bad idea. The cider was way too tart, which soured the cream. Even without the cream, the drink needed much more spice to balance its heavy apple accent. Know of a good carryout place? Let us hear about it. Write to sam.sessa@baltsun.com.

A 20-ounce mocha drink from Starbucks (with whole milk and whipped cream) is 510 calories. Add a muffin and you've got a 900- to 1,000-calorie snack. For an average-size woman, that represents more than half the recommended number of daily calories. (For an average-size man, it's just about half the daily calories.) A more calorie-conserving choice is a Starbucks 16-ounce nonfat cappuccino (only 110 calories) and a biscotto. The calorie total: 210.

Recently, I combined a holiday visit to my husband's family in Indiana with a Janet's World tax-deductible civic research trip. Preliminary results indicate there's a lot to like about Carmel, Ind., starting with the fact that the town's name is just an "a" away from a classic candy filling. Basically, Carmel is a place very much like towns across Maryland, only located in the Midwest, where people do not need bumper stickers to remind them to be civil. I was born and raised on the East Coast, where frankly it might be a good idea for some folks to have smiley faces tattooed on their foreheads to telegraph just a hint of caring.

We all entertain for different reasons, and a few days ago my husband and I hosted a small dinner for a very special purpose. Our guest of honor was one of my spouse's college students whose help we desperately needed. As the proud new owners of a flat-screen high-definition television (my spouse's belated Christmas gift), we found ourselves totally in the dark about how this slick, space-age set functioned. Even after a visit from the cable guy and several hours spent poring over the manufacturer's manual, we still couldn't get all the buttons to work.

Frank Hart of Massillon, Ohio, was seeking a recipe for a Grape-Nuts Custard Pudding similar to the one he had enjoyed in restaurants in New England, on Cape Cod in particular. Lorraine Haley of East Falmouth, Mass., sent in a recipe for the pudding that she has been making for more than 40 years. She says it is the original recipe that appeared on the box of Post Grape-Nuts cereal. The crunchy cereal almost completely dissolves once the pudding is baked, but the nutty flavor remains.

Years ago, curacao was the jewel of every well-stocked bar. The aqua liqueur with the orange flavor put the blue in Blue Hawaiians, Blue Lagoons and other kitschy drinks. Now, like many trends of decades past, curacao (pronounced "cure-a-sow") is enjoying a mini-revival in drinks that have definite party appeal -- particularly the frozen margarita.Curacao also wakes up simple desserts that are timeless and not necessarily blue. It pairs nicely with its color mate, the blueberry.Curacao doesn't start out blue.

What is the difference between heavy cream and whipping cream anyway? The Code of Federal Regulations defines cream as "the liquid milk product high in fat separated from milk" that must contain not less than 18 percent milk fat. Light cream contains between 18 percent and 30 percent milk fat; light whipping cream (also called whipping cream) contains between 30 percent and 36 percent milk fat; heavy cream contains at least 36 percent milk fat. The more fat cream has, the better and easier it will whip.
