The author hoped that "Some Days" would help his younger sister steady her nerves and find her footing as she inched along the thin path to safety.

A Parkville man has been arrested and charged with the shooting death of an East Baltimore man that took place early Saturday morning in Rossville, police said. Maurice Garnett White, 32, of the 8500 block of Dempster Court in Parkville has been charged with the first-degree murder of Erwin Lee Whaley, 35, of the 3400 block of Mayfield Ave. in Belair-Edison, according to a statement Saturday evening from Lt. Robert McCullough, a spokesman for Baltimore County Police. Around 2 a.m. police and fire officers responded to an apartment on Maidstone Court, where Whaley was found with at least one gunshot wound.

For Whaley, being a pioneer and inspiration far outweighed any embarrassment from the bad scores she might shoot. In late July at the TPC at River Highlands in Cromwell, Conn., Whaley will walk to the tee for the opening round of the 52nd Greater Hartford Open as the first woman to qualify for a PGA Tour event. Whaley, the first-year head pro at Blue Fox Run Golf Club in Avon, Conn.

Tina Whaley Parker, a longtime city Department of Recreation and Parks employee, died Aug. 5 of cancer at her Ashburton residence. She was 82. Mrs. Parker, daughter a farmer/businessman and a homemaker, was born and raised in Orangeburg, S.C. She graduated from Wilkinson High School in 1946 and earned her bachelor's degree in sociology in 1950 from what is now Morgan State University in Baltimore. Upon her graduation, she married Charles T. Parker III, who worked as a city housing manager, and began her career with Baltimore's Department of Recreation and Parks at the Fairfield Center as a part-time recreation leader.

For a trip to Cancun in February, Troy Whaley wanted a hotel with easy access to shopping, dining and night life that also had some appealing amenities, so that after a day of exploring he and his wife could come back and chill out by the pool with a drink in hand. The NH Krystal Cancun, with its oceanfront pool and convenient location within walking distance of popular shops and restaurants, seemed perfect. But when Whaley paddled up to the swim-up bar to unwind one afternoon during his stay, he was abruptly turned away without his rum punch.
