50 years ago: The invitations sent by the Westminster Chamber of Commerce that Millard E. Tydings would make an address in the Westminster High School auditorium on April 8 drew an audience of more than 500. He mentioned that the Marshall Plan and the Atlantic Pact is something that will help prevent war, if anything does. The binding of these nations will make a hostile country think before it strikes. -- Democratic Advocate, April 15, 1949.75 years ago: The annual meeting of the Carroll County Society of Baltimore was held April 10. A collection of valuable historical records, incident to the formation of Carroll County, was presented to the society by Edwin Wilmer Shriver, formerly of Westminster.

Charles Edward Essich, a retired truck driver and an outdoorsman, died of congestive heart failure Sunday at Carroll Hospital Center. The Finksburg resident was 70. Mr. Essich was born and raised in Westminster and graduated from Westminster High School. He served in the Army from 1957 to 1959. He drove trucks for more than 30 years for Shipley Transfer. He retired in 1996. He was a member of Teamsters Local 311. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and was a member of the United Coon Hunters Association.

A 45-year-old Westminster man was flown to the trauma center at Johns Hopkins Hospital after the car he was driving ran off Hook Road and struck a utility pole Thursday evening.The 6:10 p.m. crash dropped electric, telephone and cable television wires across the roadway, prompting police and fire officials to close the 600 block of Hook Road for more than two hours.The electrical wires ignited and burned while firefighters waited for Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. workers to disconnect the power.

Jennifer Minchik, 15, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chuck Minchik, has been selected to compete in the 1991 Maryland Miss Teen Pageant.Thecontest will be July 13-14 at the Holiday Inn, Bethesda, Montgomery County, where she and other 13- to 18-year-olds will be honored and recognized for their achievements in school, the community and personally.Contestants will be judged on scholastic achievement, volunteer service, speech or talent, a personal interview and a formal presentation. Awards will be presented in each category.

Navy Fireman Jason C. Ferguson and his shipmates have been awarded the Navy Unit Commendation for supporting the search and recovery efforts of TWA Flight 800 while assigned to the USS Oak Hill.The Oak Hill is a dock landing ship that was called on to assist the National Transportation Safety Board to recover crash victims and wreckage of the plane.The award commends the ship and its crew for flawless and safe work in a professional manner.A 1994 graduate of Westminster High School, Ferguson joined the Navy in July 1995.
