Women's college basketball Virginia beats Morgan State in WNIT; Cavs get Loyola next Morgan State (17-15) lost, 69-56, to Virginia (17-15) in the opening round of the Women's National Invitation Tournament on Thursday night in Charlottesville. The Bears' Brittany Dodson led all scorers with 18 points. The Cavaliers, who were led by Whitny Edwards and Ariana Moorer , with 11 and 10 points, respectively, will face Loyola in Sunday's second round at 4 p.m. Erin Hawkins hit a 3-pointer to give Morgan State a 3-0 lead before the Cavaliers went on an 11-0 run. Mike and Pam McDonagh, of Laurel, announce the engagement of their daughter, Michele McDonagh, to Marc Kimes, son of Mark Kimes, of Vienna, W.Va., and the late Marion "Cookie" Kimes. The bride-to-be is a 2002 graduate of Atholton High School and graduated from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 2006 with a degree in graphic design. She is currently an account executive for Clear Channel Outdoor. The future groom, a graduate of Parkersburg High School, graduated with a degree in accounting in 2007 from West Virginia Wesleyan College, where he earned a Master in Business Administration in 2009.

Two members of the Class 3A state champion Patterson boys basketball team -- forward Nyme Manns and center Leonard Livingston -- signed letters of intent Friday. Manns, who averaged 7.8 points and 8.2 rebounds on the hardwood and also was a standout wide receiver for the Patterson football team, will play football at West Virginia Wesleyan. "The Clipper football program is extremely [excited] that Nyme Manns will continue his scholastic and athletic career at West Virginia Wesleyan to play wide receiver for their football program," Patterson football coach Corey Johnson said in a news release.

J. Richard Carpenter announced his resignation as athletic director at Western Maryland College yesterday after 15 years in the post, effective July 1.Carpenter, 52, will retain his other post as professor of physical education and exercise science and also will coordinate the department's graduate program.Western Maryland will begin a national search for a successor and break precedent by hiring a full-time administrator.Carpenter has spent 30 years at Western Maryland, including 21 as track coach, seven as swimming coach, six as cross country coach and eight as a football assistant.

Jen Conner became the third member of Severna Park's volleyball team to accept a scholarship since the season ended when she signed with American University, a Division I school in Washington.Last month, Susan Wren and Julie Kasprzak committed to West Virginia Wesleyan. All three players were selected to the All-Metro first team after helping the Falcons to their third consecutive 4A state championship.A four-year starter, Conner moved from middle hitter to the outside this fall and recorded 202 kills.
