Two men robbed an off-duty Anne Arundel County police officer Saturday in Pasadena just before midnight and fired a shot into his car before running away, police said. The officer was driving his personal vehicle and saw two men in a parking lot in the 8100 block of Waterford Road, according to a news release from the police. The men waved him over, and he pulled over. One man pulled a gun, and the victim gave them his cash. They fired a shot into the vehicle, which missed the officer, whose name is being withheld for his safety.

Bruce Miller had only worked at Lake Waterford Park since spring and already several children had wandered off the playground and into the nearby woods or onto the parking lot.He knew a fence was needed, but when Mr. Miller, a park ranger, raised the idea, he was told there wasn't enough money for such a project.Enter Ray Cate and his fortuitous summer trip to Manheim, Pa. Mr. Cate, maintenance foreman for Lake Waterford Park, had seen a picket fence around a Manheim park and thought a similar fence might solve the problem at Lake Waterford.

Anne Arundel County recently received a $75,000 grant from the Maryland Boundless Playground Initiative Program to create a playground designed for disabled children. The grant is being supplemented by $125,000 in county funds, all of which will go toward construction of the playground at Lake Waterford Park in Pasadena. The park will be the county's first in the program. Demolition of the existing playground began early this month. The new playground is expected to open in early July.

Two county police officers talked a distraught man out of jumping off a Waterford Road overpass onto westbound Route 100 about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, police said.Officer Eric A. Snair and Cpl. Donald R. Pearson arrived on the scene to find the man standing outside the fence on the overpass, police said.Corporal Pearson talked to the man for about 20 minutes and persuaded him not to jump. He was taken to North Arundel Hospital for an emergency psychiatric evaluation by Officer Snair, police said.

Mrs. DORIS LEOLA EVANS, 78, of Pasadena, died August 6, 2005 of Heart Failure at North Arundel Hospital. She was born March 10, 1927 in Baltimore and lived on Hastings Lane in Pasadena since her 1952 marriage. She was a long time member of the Lake Waterford Community Association and the AARP. She was preceded in death by her husband, Israel Berkley Evans, Jr. in 2000. Survivors include her son, Cory J. Evans and companion Deborah Walters. Brother Donald Hamlin and wife Janice. Sister-in-law Joyce Evans.

Mary F. Mueller, a native of Ireland who was skilled in lace making and other needlework, died Sunday at the Meridian Nursing Center-Long Green after a short illness. She was 100 and had lived in Homeland and more recently in Timonium.A mass of Christian burial for Mrs. Mueller was being offered today at the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen, 5200 N. Godenne, a retired data management librarian and former Columbia resident, died Oct. 30 of complications of emphysema and cancer at her home in Enfield, Conn. She was 69.She was born in Brussels, Belgium, and lived Connecticut before moving to Columbia in 1980, after her divorce. She was a sales associate for Russell T. Baker Co. and later a parts analyst for AAI Corp. in Cockeysville. She was a configuration management and data management librarian for Daedalean Inc. before returning to Enfield in 1990.
