Residents of New Windsor experienced a rash of break-ins and thefts over the weekend. Police said six buildings and vehicles, including the mayor's, were hit.State police said a lock on a shed belonging to Mayor Jack Gullo Jr. was cut, but nothing was taken. Two other residents in the same block of Main Street reported break-ins, police said. In once case, an automobile emergency kit valued at $20 was stolen.A resident of Church Street reported someone cut the lock on a garage and broke a window of the van inside.

A Union Bridge family was left homeless after a chimney fire severely damaged its Pipe Creek Road home Saturday morning, fire officials said.The fire was reported at 12:03 a.m. It took about 40 firefighters 90 minutes to extinguish the blaze, which destroyed the attic and heavily damaged the second floor.Arthur and Kathryn Carr and their children, Alice, 17, and Allan, 14, escaped unharmed.The state fire marshal's office determined the blaze was accidental, said W. Faron Taylor, a deputy fire marshal.

Petitions opposing transfers to Springfield still circulatingThe South Carroll Coalition will continue to gather signatures on petitions against state proposals for Springfield Hospital Center in Sykesville.The signers are protesting the proposed transfer of violent patients from Rosewood Center in Owings Mills and the conversion of Springfield's Lane Building into a juvenile detention center."Nobody wants to let go of the petition drive," said Kathleen Horneman, coalition member.Since the drive began in December, the coalition has collected about 1,200 signatures and forwarded the petitions to the state.

Manchester accepts $1,500 bid for the town's old police 0) cruiserThe Manchester Town Council voted Wednesday to accept a bid of $1,500 for the town's old police cruiser.Four bids were received. The winning offer came from David Shreve, of 3037 Westminster St. The lowest offer was $711.99."I didn't think I would get it," Mr. Shreve said. "But you never know with these kind of things."He said he picked up the light blue 1987 Chevrolet Caprice yesterday morning. The car is in good condition, he said.
