ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WALT DISNEY'S ANIMATED CHARACTER FROM MICKEY MOUSE TO ALADDIN.John Grant.Hyperion.384 pages. $40.In his 1956 autobiography, the great British political cartoonist David Low recalled meeting Walt Disney twice. On both occasions, he was disappointed that the man he considered "the most significant figure in graphic art since Leonardo da Vinci" purposely "shied off art talk" and "looked puzzled" when asked the simple question, "Don't you like to draw?"The answer, equally simple, was no. Disney was not much of an animator.

WALT DISNEY WORLD, Fla. You would think that Celine Dion would have gotten the best seat in the restaurant that night. But no, there the pop diva was -- our gossipy waiter had pointed her out -- filing in from the open-air observation deck with the rest of the crowd. Meanwhile, I sat regally at a table by a vast window and, between courses, enjoyed an unobstructed view of the very same fireworks that poor little Celine had schlepped out to see. I didn't have special tickets or celebrity status or Disney connections or even press privileges to pave my way. As a greenhorn to Walt Disney World, I didn't even have a prior visit for a frame of reference.

Jim and Pat Beech had planned a special trip to Walt Disney World just to see the 75 Mickey Mouse statues that were installed last fall in honor of the mouse's 75th birthday. But Disney shipped the Mickeys out of town last Wednesday, angering some vacationers. The statues headed for Walt Disney Co.'s annual meeting in Philadelphia this Wednesday. "I don't think having them at a shareholders' meeting is fair to all the vacationers who had hoped to see them. Personally, I think it's real poor," said Beech, a Northern Virginia computer specialist who estimates he and his wife have visited Walt Disney World 20 or 30 times since honeymooning at the park in 1983.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Walt Disney World's next theme park will mix wild animals and environmental messages with elaborate thrill rides, a detailed outline of the project shows. The animal park planned for this central Florida city has a strong conservation theme, but its design could put competitors on the endangered species list. The proposed combination of roller coasters, gorillas and exotic settings mirrors the tourist appeal of Tampa's Busch Gardens. And a dinosaur section of the Disney project could take a bite out of the Jurassic Park attraction planned for Universal Studios Florida.

SANFORD, Fla. -- Attacking under cover of darkness, the deadliest swarm of tornadoes in state history pummeled Central Florida early yesterday, killing at least 38 and leaving at least 10 people missing last night. The death toll exceeded that of Hurricane Andrew. The El Nino-related twisters, some with winds in excess of 200 mph, sucked people out of their homes, spinning them in the vortex. One teen-ager was blown out of a window, landed 150 feet away in a cow pasture -- and survived to tell the tale.
