WALKERSVILLE - In a townhouse community where residents can't remember a shooting, let alone a killing, on its quiet cul-de-sacs, neighbors-turned-witnesses spent yesterday helping with funeral arrangements for a 16-year-old girl and her 5-week-old baby gunned down in front of their home Saturday afternoon as other children played nearby. Authorities have arrested Sonya Marie Daniels, who they say is a longtime girlfriend of the baby's father and had recently been dumped by him. She is charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Francis Scott Key's playoff dreams have turned into a nightmare the past two weeks. Pete Genovese threw a 36-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Geppert with 1:57 left to give visiting Walkersville a 27-20 upset of No. 13 Francis Scott Key in a Monocacy Valley Athletic League game last night. This was Key's second straight loss. South Hagerstown handed the Eagles a 24-7 defeat last week and Key fell to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the MVAL. Coach John Baugher said he knew that finishing 10-0 and missing the state playoffs was a possibility, but now the Eagles can fare no better than 8-2 and appear out of the hunt.

The Southern boys lacrosse team introduced Walkersville to a different style of lacrosse. Unleashing a swift-hitting attack that produced the game's first five goals, the Bulldogs of Anne Arundel County made quick work of Walkersville by sailing to a 15-7 victory in a Class 2A-1A state semifinal at CCBC-Catonsville yesterday. The West Region champion Lions (13-5) were the first Frederick County team to reach the state semifinals. "We felt that by putting pressure on them and riding them hard, maybe they didn't see that type of lacrosse in the western part of Maryland," said Southern coach Ray Bowen, whose squad won the East Region.
