One day last summer at the Maryland House of Correction in Jessup, a prisoner named Dennis Wise took a seat at the back of the tiny cubicle where I hold forth each week as a volunteer writing instructor. It's a loosely structured class and it isn't unusual that prisoners wander in for a session or two and then drift away. While always a possibility that such drifting is a commentary on the quality of the instruction, it is also true that writing is a painful business. The core of regulars who turn out every week come not because they want to, or because someone else wants them to, but because, in the true writer's motivation, they simply have to. Buried inside is something terrible, something wonderful, something that absolutely must come out. All their lives they have tried either to unlock long-imprisoned feelings or to escape them; that they have failed is as evident as their bleak existence in this ancient, decaying prison, far removed from the commerce of the normal world.

Arthritis affects almost 80 percent of Americans. And those affected are getting younger, according to Dr. Barry Waldman of OrthoMaryland and director of the Center for Joint Preservation and Replacement at the Rubin Institute for Advanced Orthopedics at Sinai Hospital. "We don't really know why, but we're seeing an epidemic of patients with wearing out of joints in their 40s and even late 30s." But the good news, Waldman says, is that diet and exercise are the best ways to treat the disease.

Of all the heroines in the Bible, few have been as popular with artists or received exposure in as many different ways as Esther, a young woman who hid her Jewish identity, wed a Persian king and saved her people from destruction by a sworn enemy. The story of Esther has been retold in Italian Renaissance paintings, French sculptures, even a 1960 movie starring Joan Collins, Esther and the King. In 2004, pop star Madonna announced that she wanted to change her name to Esther as part of her involvement in Kabbalah.

Two decades ago, when lawyer Robert Waldman and his family moved to the Annapolis neighborhood of Homewood, there was talk of converting the old railroad right-of-way across from his house into some kind of thruway. An extra lane to take the traffic pressure off West Street, which ran parallel several blocks away; a route for a shuttle bus from downtown Annapolis to Westfield Annapolis Mall - city officials were regularly talking about ways to pave the four-block long stretch of grass that bisected the old neighborhood of mixed-generation families.

A rags-to-riches story, Charismatic is not.Even though the chestnut colt drew little attention before his unexpected win in the Kentucky Derby, and his follow-up win in the Preakness, Charismatic's breeding heralds the makings of a champion.Shake the horse's family tree and roses, black-eyed Susans and carnations fall out. Secretariat. Bold Ruler. Northern Dancer. All winners of one or more Triple Crown races, with blue blood to boot."It's like a basketball player being descended from Bill Russell, Magic Johnson and Larry Bird," said Rick Waldman, a thoroughbred consultant in Lexington, Ky.Pedigreed to the hilt, Charismatic runs for the Triple Crown in today's Belmont Stakes.
