After hearing opposition from only one person, the county commissioners voted unanimously Monday to extend a building moratorium in the Wakefield Valley area.The ban will be extended from December untilFeb. 27 to give the county time to finish the approval process on a mineral mining plan.Eleven people attended a 20-minute hearing at the County Office Building at which County Attorney Charles W. "Chuck" Thompson Jr. explained the ban.The moratorium will not affect mining companies that own land in the area, he said.

New Windsor resident John B. Farrell asked the question often heard from people who live in Wakefield Valley, where marble is plentiful and mining companies want to dig:"What will be done to reimburse us for loss of equity?" he asked county planning officials yesterday at a public meeting about a proposed comprehensive mining plan.Residents are concerned that expanding quarrying operations in the area will devalue their land.About 50 people attended the afternoon meeting at the County Office Building to ask questions about theplan, which will be voted on by the Board of County Commissioners inlate January or early February.

With Hank Majewski, golf is his game and his business.Ever sinceMajewski, owner of the Wakefield Valley course, was introduced to golf as a caddy at the old Baltimore Country Club's Roland Park layout,he has had continuing success.First there was the steady development of skills as an outstanding player, closely followed by earning a degree in law. Then came the rise to presidency of the Middle Atlantic Professional Golfers' Association, capturing special national awards along the way.Responsibility never was a problem.

The conversation was focused on "shooting your age."More specifically, at what stage of a golfer's life should he consider the prime time to post a score the equal of his age.It was conceded to be before age 100 and after age 60. The best score ever recorded by a golfer at any age is 59.Still, the feat which has been described as the most satisfying thrill in the game has been accomplished at a wide variety of ages. It has been recorded even by golfers in their 90s.However, take it from former Piney Branch senior champion Vernon Sullivan, who, at age 72, feels he may be within striking distance of the rare accomplishment.

Units were out for 56 minutes.* Wakefield Valley: Westminster, New Windsor, Pleasant Valley and Manchester fire companies were dispatched to an apartment fire on LaCosta Circle at 9:04 p.m. Wednesday. They were out for 50 minutes.

Serge Hogg and Jenny Chuasiriporn won the boys and girls overall titles, respectively, in the local segment of the annual Middle Atlantic PGA Pro-Junior tournament at Rocky Point Golf Course yesterday.The course escaped much of the day's rainy weather, with only five of 22 groups forced to wait out a 45-minute delay before completing their rounds.Hogg, playing from Longview Golf Course, won on a match of cards after tying with Dean Blankenship of Wakefield Valley GC. The 3 handicappers registered a 1-over-par 73. Chuasiriporn, 14, a previous winner in events on this eastern Baltimore County course, had her best round for the site, 39-3978.

Saying the Westminster Planning and Zoning Commission failed to follow city law when it approved the Fenby Farms housing development adjacent to Wakefield Valley Golf and Conference Center, Circuit Judge Raymond E. Beck Sr. has ordered the commission to begin hearings on the development all over again.The order, filed in Carroll Circuit Court, sends Fenby Farms -- which took two years to gain planning commission approval -- back to the beginning of the process. Wakefield Valley owner Hank Majewski appealed the commission's approval of Fenby Farms last August.
