The last time Qonta Waddell's mother saw him alive, the slightly built 24-year-old was hogtied and screaming for his life as he was carried away by two men with handguns. City police have charged Sherman Anderson, 32, in connection with the kidnapping and murder of Waddell, who was found shot to death in a West Baltimore alley four miles from his mother's house. Anderson has been arrested nearly 40 times, never serving significant jail time, and has beaten charges of attempted first-degree murder three times.

Nick Sabo, a South River High School senior, recently received his yearbook order forms, including ballots to vote for senior superlatives, such as most popular or class clown. He hardly recognized any of the nominees' names. "He didn't know anybody, and it broke my heart," said his mother, Mary Ann Sabo, who lives in Edgewater. "I guess students are afraid." Sabo was born with cerebral palsy, a brain injury that put him in a wheelchair, slurs his speech, and made him an outcast among his peers.

His brain felt like a ripe melon "ready to blow up." Former Maryland fullback Tim Cesa switched helmets four times during the 2006 season in search of one that would protect his head from additional concussions. None of them helped. After a series of five or six concussions over almost two seasons, Cesa's career ended with a final hit on the first play against Florida State on Oct. 28, 2006. Now, as a manager at R.J. Bentley's Filling Station, Cesa's only tie to the football program is through fans who pack the popular downtown bar. It's the only connection he can handle while he finishes school.
