Linthicum Heights-based Foundation Coal Holdings Inc. announced yesterday that it will shutter a coal mine in southern Illinois, one of three struck by union workers after the two sides failed to reach a collective bargaining agreement. The Wabash mine in Keensburg, Ill., had been in financial trouble, posting a $26 million loss for 2006, and Foundation Coal was looking for concessions on wages from United Mine Workers of America in exchange for capital improvements to keep the mine open.

Kmart plans to close its Wabash Avenue store in Baltimore by early December, laying off more than 100 employees as the company works to improve its financial performance, according to a notice submitted to the state last week. Representatives of Klein Enterprises, which owns the Wabash Avenue center, said Kmart's parent company, Sears Holdings Corp. had not notified them definitively about the decision, but believe the closure provides an opportunity to reinvent the northwest Baltimore property.

Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Ind., has appointed former Washington College coach Terry Corcoran as its first men's lacrosse coach. Corcoran, who leaves his position as Elizabethtown coach, brings 31 seasons of experience as a head coach to a Little Giants program that will move from club to varsity status in 2014-15. “Terry Corcoran brings together the highest standards of coach and athlete, student and teacher, we expect at Wabash,” Wabash President Patrick E. White said.
