Area schools and literacy programs seek volunteers to help children and adults improve reading skills and to assist in related projects.Among them is:Girl Scouts of Central Maryland, for after-school and summer tutoring of elementary and middle school pupils at its Westside Drop-In Center in the basement of the Enoch Pratt Free Library branch at 31 S. Payson St. Volunteers are needed from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Area schools and literacy programs seek volunteers to help children and adults improve reading skills and to assist in related projects. Among them are:Youthful Inspirations Inc., an enrichment program for elementary and middle school pupils at three Baltimore County schools, Wellwood International Magnet School, 2901 Smith Ave.; Sudbrook Magnet Middle, 4300 Bedbrook Drive; and Bedford Elementary, 7407 Dorman Drive. Volunteers are needed from 3: 30 p.m. to 4: 45 p.m. weekdays, depending upon volunteers' schedules, to help pupils with writing assignments.

Library offering preschool classes The east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way, offers preschool classes to help children develop creative expression, social skills, comprehension and the foundations of reading. "Play Partners" for infants through 23 months with an adult is offered at 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Mondays, through Sept. 29. "All Together Now," for children of all ages and adults, is offered at 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. Thursdays. A Farm-City celebration theme is planned for Sept. 25. "Toddler Tunes and Tales," for ages 1 and 2 (with an adult)
