Beloved uncle of to a host of nieces and nephews and also many dear friends. A Memomorial Service will be held at Grace United Church of Christ, 1404 S. Charles St. on Sunday, July 16, 2006 at 12 noon. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to VA MHCS For BRECC Hospice in memory of Wm. Janet W. Flagle, a homemaker and volunteer, died of breast cancer Monday at Blakehurst Retirement Community in Towson. She was 78. She was born Janet Waters in Baltimore and raised in Roland Park. She was a 1945 graduate of Roland Park Country School and earned a degree in English literature from Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., in 1949. Mrs. Flagle, who lived for 35 years on Circle Road in Ruxton before moving to the retirement community five years ago, was director of volunteer services at Union Memorial Hospital from 1958 to 1965.

Concerned that volunteer fire support services are being stretched too thin, Harford County is looking to hire paid, part-time emergency medical responders to supplement its volunteer force. By next year, officials hope to establish a foundation that will contract paid emergency medical technicians, to be drawn from a pool as needed. The county's slow-growing volunteer force has suffered under the weight of an increasing call volume over the past 15 years, with most calls considered non-emergency.

Gordon "Pat" Alexander, a retired can company manager and longtime Greater Baltimore Medical Center volunteer, died of bone cancer Tuesday at Gilchrist Center for Hospice Care. The Towson resident was 92. Mr. Alexander was born in Beith, Scotland, and when he was age 9 immigrated with his family to Penn Yan, N.Y., where he graduated from high school. He worked for Eastman Kodak Co. and Esso Standard Oil Co. before going to work in 1938 for Continental Can Co. in Rochester, N.Y. In 1960, he was transferred to Baltimore and at the time of his 1974 retirement was service manager for the company's Eastern District.

Marianne Warehime, the first female president of Carroll County's firefighters and emergency medical services groups, turned the reins of power over to a third-generation firefighter at the Carroll County Volunteer Emergency Services Association's annual convention. E. Richard "Ricky" Baker Jr., following his father and great-uncle as president, vowed to continue the work started last year when the county's firefighters, EMS and fire chiefs voted to combine. "I want to continue the transition," said Baker of Mount Airy.

Also survived by eleven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 10 A.M., Saturday, at Wesley Freedom United Methodist Church, Eldersburg. HICKORY RIDGE resident Lee Mandelbaum, 72, says she has been volunteering since she was old enough to work. Maybe that's why she has logged more hours as a volunteer at Howard County General Hospital than anyone else. Mandelbaum works in the hospital medical library 700 to 800 hours a year. She also holds two paid positions at the hospital, working at the reception desk 12 hours a week and in the gift shop four hours a week. "I've always been looking for ways to help people," she said.
