Megan Parris scored seven goals and Chrissy Clancy had six to lead Virginia Wesleyan to a 20-9 women's lacrosse victory over host Villa Julie yesterday. The Marlins outscored the Mustangs 13-4 in the second half to pull away. Virginia Wesleyan came out strong, taking a 5-1 lead with 19:51 left in the first half. Villa Julie rallied, however, scoring four straight goals to get within 6-5 with 1:52 left in the half. But the Marlins pressed for another goal with 26 seconds left, and Villa Julie never got any closer.

After playing four straight overtime games to tie an NCAA record, UMBC had a chance to make history Saturday night at Navy. But the Midshipmen didn't cooperate. Navy led all the way as forward Worth Smith scored 15 points in a dominating, 73-58 victory. With the victory, Navy (3-3) is off to its best start since the 2008-09 season, when it opened 7-1. Navy's win was paved by a 45-33 advantage in rebounding. UMBC (2-4) was led by reserve Chase Plummer , who had 11 points and seven rebounds, both team highs.

Connecticut's Ryan Boatright and Omar Calhoun combined for 43 points - almost as many as the entire UMES team - and the host Huskies stayed unbeaten athome with an 84-50 win Monday in the schools' first meeting in men's basketball in 25 years. It was an emotional night for the Huskies and the announced 8,841 in the building, as the victims of Friday's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., were remembered before the game. Players, cheerleaders, band and dance team members gathered in a circle, holding 26 candles.

Anthony Gill came off the bench to score a career-high 18 points and Joe Harris snapped out of a shooting slump with 16 as host Virginia beat Navy, 67-42, in men's basketball Tuesday night. Mike Tobey and Malcolm Brogdon added 13 apiece for Virginia (3-1), which held the Midshipmen to 33.3 percent shooting from the field and 30.4 percent from 3-point range. The Cavaliers continued to struggle from the outside, going 3-for-15 from 3-point range, but Harris was 2-for-3 from beyond the arc and 7-for-8 from the field.

Et cetera Bayhawks activate three, including Grant The Chesapeake Bayhawks activated high-scoring attackman John Grant Jr. and long-stick midfielder John Orsen , whose indoor seasons ended Saturday. Chesapeake also activated former Virginia goalkeeper Kip Turner , the 2010 Major League Lacrosse Goalie of the Year, who was unavailable for the first two games of the season. Grant is a former MLL Most Valuable Player and three-time Offensive Player of the Year.
