22 Total kills by Archbishop Spalding senior hitter Stephanie Howard in two matches last week. Howard had 12 kills in a 3-0 win over St. Vincent Pallotti and 10 more in a 3-2 loss to Mount de Sales in Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference action. It was the first loss of the season for the Cavaliers (11-1).

The host Boys' Latin football team overcame a slow start, put up three touchdowns and a field goal in the second quarter and stayed in front of St. Vincent Pallotti the rest of the way to win, 43-22, at J. Duncan Smith Field on Saturday. The Lakers (3-1) established field possession early, containing the Panthers (5-2), but were unable to score until William Wingo picked off Mason Clark's pass over the middle for a 10-yard return for a touchdown with 4:52 left in the first quarter.

Despite losing to St. John's in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association C Conference semifinals the past two seasons, St. Vincent Pallotti's boys lacrosse team is eager for a new challenge in the B Conference. The Panthers, who went 4-13 in their last season in the B conference in 2011, finished 13-4 the past two seasons and won their conference division. Fourth-year coach Kris Weaver, however, thinks his young team is ready for the tougher B conference after "teaching these guys how to win" in the C conference.

The 5-foot-6 sophomore guard displayed her do-it-all skills to lead the Eagles to a 3-0 start, highlighted by her Most Valuable Player honors at the team's Eagle Classic over the weekend. Murray opened the season with a triple-double in a 40-30 win over Friends on Nov. 28 - totaling 13 points, 12 steals, 10 rebounds and also contributing four assists. In Friday's first game at the Eagle Classic against Chapelgate Christian - a 38-19 win - she scored 9 points and added 13 steals, 11 rebounds and six assists.

Heading into Saturday's Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference basketball semifinal against St. Vincent Pallotti, Roland Park forward Lindsey Edwards knew rebounding would be critical. With three seconds left, Edwards got the biggest rebound of all, grabbing teammate Bailey Andrews' missed free throw. Edwards held on, was quickly fouled and then hit one free throw to pad the No. 3 Reds' lead and secure a 50-46 victory. They will meet No. 1 McDonogh in the IAAM A Conference final on Monday at 5 p.m. at Archbishop Spalding.

For McDonogh's girls basketball team, the third quarter is prime time. The No. 3 Eagles have won some of their toughest games by coming out strong after halftime, and they did it again Wednesday night to fuel a 53-38 win at No. 7 St. Vincent Pallotti. The win keeps McDonogh in sole possession of first place in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference. The Eagles, who have won 14 straight games, used a smothering defense to force seven turnovers and hold the Panthers without a point for more than eight minutes.

St. Vincent Pallotti High's spring gala fundraiser, "Mardi Gras Madness," will be held Saturday, March 24 from 7 to 11 p.m., at the University of Maryland, Marriott Inn and Conference Center, 3501 University Blvd. east, in Hyattsville. The fundraiser includes a silent auction and a live auction with Scott Wykoff of WBAL radio. Individual tickets are $75, couples pay $140 and a table of 10 costs $650. Ticket prices includes catered dinner stations, including peel-and-eat shrimp, and an open bar. The Pallotti Band will perform jazz under the direction of Niko Iampieri, and there will be dancing with Class DJ's.

For a first-year A Conference program, St. Vincent Pallotti certainly had the game Thursday to contend with No. 1 Archbishop Spalding in an Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland semifinal — for a half. In a game that was tied at halftime, the No. 13 Panthers lost their composure midway through the third quarter and the host Cavaliers took advantage at the free-throw line, as Brya Freeland went 9-for-9 to fuel a 73-46 victory that sends Spalding to its second straight title game.
