They may be humble and practical or elevated by imagination to works of art.Lamps, that is.These inspired lamps by Massachusetts artist Janna Ugone are practical but by no means humble. With their flirtatious finials and jewel-studded aluminum or copper stems, they seem destined to become collector's items. Only a few are shown here but they're available in a staggering variety of patterns and colors because Ms. Ugone welcomes commissions. The mostly ceramic (and sometimes paper) shades are earthy and impeccably proportioned.

YesCall: (410) 435-0101Prices: $2-$9.95*** People have been power breakfasting at the Cross Keys Inn's Village Roost for as long as I can remember. The location is convenient -- right off the Jones Falls Expressway -- and you never have to worry about parking. Seats are comfortable, the service is good, the dining rooms are reasonably quiet, and the tables are large enough to spread out your papers for a working breakfast.

Joan Vass is not your typical designer. In past lives she's been an art historian, a columnist for Art in America, an editor at art book publisher Harry Abrams and an assistant curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.Something she's always been, though, is a humanitarian. In fact, it was the knitting concern she set up as a charitable cottage industry in 1973 that led to her success today. In 1976 a friend suggested she bring some of the unusual, one-of-a-kind hats and mufflers created by her and her band of homemaker-student knitters to Henri Bendel, the toniest of tony New York department stores.

The Rouse Co. is seeking City Council approval to expand its retail space at the Village of Cross Keys and make other changes there.Fifth District City Council members Iris Reeves, Rochelle "Rikki" Spector and Vera Hall jointly introduced Monday a bill that would amend a 1972 Planned Unit Development to permit a series of changes proposed by Village of Cross Keys Inc., a Rouse subsidiary.According to the legislation, the Columbia-based developer is seeking authorization to construct a new ballroom annex to the Cross Keys Inn; construct an office building in place of several apartment buildings that were permitted in the previous Cross Keys plan but never constructed; build a "limited number" of town houses; build parking facilities; and convert "some or all of the second floor of the Village Square from office uses to retail uses or to a combination of retail uses and office uses."
